Tue Governor General and Princess visited the Grey Nuns’ convent at Ottawa the other day, and were the recipients of addresses from the pupils. They were received at the en- trance by Messrs. W. H. Walker and A. Renaud in behalf of the sisters. fhe former is a prominent Protestant lawyer in the capital.

AN EcGs-TRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE. — a ‘*‘ brown red game” pullet belonging to Mr. W. Gibson, of Halifax, laid an egg three ounces in weight, two and three quar- ter inches in length, and six and a half inches in girth. For a bird only seven months old, this is pretty good.

P. tor King’s County, adding that he was first returned to Parliament at last General Election.” ‘This is an error which should be eorrected before the Parliamentary Companion is issued. Mr. McDonald was one of the first representatives of King’s—he and Hon. D. Davies having been elected in 1873, upon the Island entering Contederation.

Mrs. FLANDRAU, who has been exhibited in New England as a giantess, died on Monday. She was born in Broadhead, Wis., a little over eighteen years ago. She was a pretty girl, despite the fact ot being almost six feet tali and weighing 516 lbs. It may sound strangely, But it is nevertheless true, that outside of the fact of being a general favorite with those about her, she was also the recipient of hon- érable matrimonial intentions on the part of

S1r,—I notice that several of our city papers have published @ letter addressed to Finlay McNeill, Esq., from a gentleman in Portland, on the subject of sugar beet culture. I have been surprised that some of the editors have not exposed the arrant nonsence displayed in the said communication. The writer offers to

ortland, and then goes on to say that one dollar per ton would pay freight and commis- sion. Now, a ton of beets is a little over thir- ty-three bushels, so that the freight, at one dollar per ton would be about three cents per bushel. Very moderate freights have been obtained of late years, but this would beat (beet) them all. A very low freight is twelve cents per bushel, which would amount to four dollars per ton. Commission at tive per cent. would be twenty tive cents, and duty—ten per cent. advalorem—fifty cents, leaving the large sum of twenty-five cents per ton, or about three quarters of a cent per bushel for the far- mers. I have not reckoned anything for in- surance, wharfage, weighing, etc.,and I think I may safely say it would take the remaining twenty-five cents to cover this, so that our farmers would be growing beets and carting them to the market for the fun of the thing.

I do not think you need come to the Island, Mr. Gennert, as our farmers are not verdant | enough to grow beets solely for your benefit. |

Orrawa, Feb. 25.

A deputation of Government supporters from the Maritime Provinces will wait on Mr. Tilley to-morrow, for the purpose of urging a reduction of the duty on tea and molasses.

The Governor General is seeking personal acquaintance with each of the members of Parliament.

Yesterday, those whose names commenced with A and B were invited to call at the Governor General’s office.

The Standard announces conspicuously that the French Prince Imperial will sail for Cape Town to-morrow. He intends to join a volunteer column which is likely to have the sharpest fighting, his earnest

army having been rejected.

The French Atlantic cable is broken 161 miles from St. Pierre, Miquelon, in 500 fathoms of water.

FRENCH NEWS. Paris, Feb. 25. President Grevy and the Ministers op- pose more strongly than ever the impeach- ment of the Cabinet of the 16th of May. The Chamber of Deputies will probably

settle the difticulty by passing a vote of cen- sure on the De Broglie Ministry.

FAREWELL! How countless and how varied

Are the emotions called into action

Such am I come to take of thee, my brother ! Of thee ! who seem’d as strong and vigorous But a few days since, as thy young loved companion— Him, who now pallid by grief, stands sorrow- ing o'er thy bier. Oh! as I turn from those changed lineaments, rigid and lifeless, How swiftly memory, the mirror of the past, Gives back the banished hopes of earlier years, With all the freshness of reality. A thousand scenes, in which thou bore a part, Are passing bright before me. Again thy light laugh echoes in my ears ; Again thy bright form bounds before my eyes, But dark shadows fall ! And wrapt in gloom, those blessed images ! And in their stead arise the mournful fears, sy which we watched the fade from day to day, And the last look of dying love That sank so strangely sweet into the inmost soul. There to be cherished, like a precious gem. Unsullied ; unforgotten ; never to be erased Until its immortal sphere, Like thine, be passed and gone.
