Tue Patriot is a Provincial news- paper. A modern Enoch Arden has turned up| iu the couoty of Lenark, Ont., bur | fortunately wi hout Enoch’s tragic ex-} perience. Eighteen years ago David Ennis, of Envi-fil, married a young lady of that place, aud soon after leit to seek his fortune in parts unknown. With the exception of one letter, no information has since been received from him until a few days ago, when the news reached Perth that he had returned, and his arrival “ followed close vpon,” as Hamlet says. He was met by a young man of seventeen whom he had never seen, bu: who proved to be his son, by whom he was driven home to be re-united to the p ‘tient Penelope who had so loug awaited the return of her Ulysses.

The Cavendish-Burke Murderer.
From information gleaned at Dublin, it appears that Westgate, or O'Brien, the man arrested in Venezuela on his confession that he was concerned in the Phcenix Park muriers, isa Seorchman. On the day of the tragedy he sailed from Northwall for Swansea, at seven o'clock, p. m., or ten minutes before the tragedy occurred. Con- sequently he could not have been one of the assassins. Some of his friends were with him at Northwall for an hour before the’ vessel sailed. The authorities in Dablin, | are confident that Westgate is innocent, |

Victoria, B. C.
The climate of Victoria, B. C., has the purest summer climate of all places I have ever visited. There is absolutely no dis- comfort from heat felt here. The mercury seldom goes above 74°. Thick undercloth- ing and substantial woolen under-garments are worn the summer through. Yet the weather is bright and sunny, the air 1s pleasantly warm, aod the gardens are fillea sith flowers. Loxuriant growths of honey suckles cover the fences and verandas, an he roses are of astonishing size. Wid rose bushes border the rural lanes and hid: he fields with their dense masses of lew and blossom. All berries and small fruits fl.urish. The winter temperature is sin zularly mild for this high latitude, the owest ordinary rapge of the thermomete: being 10° above zero. The winter seasunr is long aud dreary, however, not much snow, but a great deal of raw, rainy, fogzy weather. For a summer resort for peop who lke rowing, fishing, yachting and riding under sunny skies and in an atmos phere like that of early October in New Evgland, Victoria has no equal. The Fredericton Affair.
Frevericton, August 1.—The excite- ment which prevailed throughout the town yesterday, has now quite subsided. All efforts to find Virtue have proved use’ess. Search is being made this morning across the river, as it was reported that a man an swering his description was seen in a smal! beat with two other men, going over, public opinion here bears out the course adop:ed by the policemen yesterday, and if any of the shots fired by the police had taken fatal effect, there is no doubt but the community would back up the man by whose hand it was done. Messrs. Frazer, Wetmore, and Winslow have been employed to defend the prisovuers.
Sergeant Vandine’s physicians, Doctors Atherton and Coburn, say he passed a satis factory night last night. If nothing occars he probably will have a speedy recovery although it will be a long time before he will use his arm again.—St. John News.
