THAT SUBSIDY.

We are informed, and are authorized to Siale, that the Charlottetown Board of Trade had nothing whatever to do with obtaining a “‘subsidy to the charterers of certain tramp steamers which were loaded with oais in Charlottetown this spring,” as insinuated by our corréspon- dent Shi, per,”

The arrangement deems to have been made by the Guvernment and the “char- terers,” whoever they may have been.

The shippers of these oats, we presume, had the grain oo hand ;and, finding no marketin the Provinces—owing as we contend to large importatioos of corn, res sulting from the abolition of the corn duty—while prices ruled low in England, they turned to the Government ; and, having irfluence at Oitawa, they ob- tained the subsidy for their chartered steamer,

The transaction shows ingenuity and resourcefulnes3 on the part of the ouyers and shippers of these oate. But it was grossiy unfair to other shippers and Owners of shipping here. We don’t blame the charterers who obtained the subsidy, Merchants are to be justified in doing what they can to save them- sclves from loss, so long as it cau be done honorably. But whatabout ine governs ment which allowed a large amount of pub- lie money to be ueed for the relief of cer- tain merchants aod charterers while other merchants and ship owners in the com munity got no subsidy and suffered loss? What wiil those who have oats on hand and obtained no subsidy do? And whet will those unsubsidized ship owners and shippers who make a business of carrying oats between here and England do?

It will readily be seem that a subsidy to Steamship ownversorcharterers,who provide steamers fitted with cold storage and ven- tilating appliances and bring ships here for the purpose of opening a new and lucrative trade direct between this Pro. vince and Great Britain in respect to fruit, butter, .cheese, poultry, meats, eggs, etc., is a different thing toa subsidy to the cbharterers of an Ocean tramp which calls here, ouce for all,to loadoate! We should commend the yguve:nment that pro« vided the subsidy in the first case ; we have .o condemn the government which has provided the subsidy in the last case, Of course to Board cf Trade of Charlotte- town could have nothing to do with the latter trawsaction. The Board of Trade exists for the public good ; bunt thie trans. action wes for the good ef a few favored individuals.

Moonicar Excursion.--It ie hoped tbat every lover of a good time is bearing iv mind the excursion tomorrow (Wednes- day) night. The excursion promises to be & great success. A limited number of tickets will be sold on the wharf before the Princess leaves.

Tae Campana.—The Campana called at this port yesterday afternoon on return to Montreal, She left sgain shortly after 9p. m- witha large cargo consisting in part of 1900 boxes cheese shipped by Carvell Brothers, 1200 boxes cheese ship~ ped by A. J. Biffio and 2000 bexes egge shipped by Sundry persons. The Cam-~ pans’s passenger list this trip numbers 120 persons mostly taking the round trip.

Houee, munnbone pe guests last night participated in a m@Fquerade ball arranged by the genial host und hostess. The costumes were very pretty, and in some cases unique. The proceedings which began by agraod march to the ballroom continued throughout the evening to the great enjoyment of the guests. A refresh~ ing tupper was served and the music was exceptionally good. _ Saovip we Struprep.—The practice now indulged in by many boys and men of bathing in public p'aces is growing to such extent that something should be done tostop it. Laet evening a man undressed himeelf at the foot of Richmond Street, West, in the presence of a crewd of children cf both sexes. He was apparently druok, and had to be dressed and taken awsy by one of the residenta of the neighe borhood. An occasional visit on the part of the police would doa great deal to pre~ vent such scenes.

Tse Boat Race.—Tomorrow morning’s race promises to be one of the most keen contested yet. Last year the Flirt won firet prize, but this year the aew boats Freda, Ladysmith, Gentleman and On- ward are likely to meke things interesting. Dr. Alley will start the race at 10 o’elock sharp.
