President’s Report
This report is supposed to answer the question "What have I been doing as President of the Student Union?" It is not my inten— tion to delve too deeply into details but I will at—
tempt to give you some idea of what I have been doing to earn my $123.80 per month. ,
I hope you will not find this too boring and if you do, try to imagine how I feel saying this.
I shall begin in the be— ginning. One of the first things we attempted to do was formulate an anti—cal- endar at the end of last year. This idea failed dis— mally for several reasons; the main one being the lack of student personnel to take questionnaires to the classes. The general atti- tude seemed to be summed up by one sweet young thing in a class which I went to when she said: "Do I have to fill another one of these out?" "I filled one out this morning." What she failed to recognize was that it had been for a dif- ferent course and a differ— ent instructor. Rick Huyck and myself, with the help of a few others, were tre— rmendously encouraged by the polling of 40 of 350 plus coursed- a very fine sample.
The purpose of the calen— 'dar was to inform students and particularly new stu- dents about courses and professors. However, it se ems we all forgot we enter- ed this place bright—eyed and ignorant at one time. Anyway, another attempt will be made this year witfi the help of the faculty'assoc—
iation.
Classes ended at this point and the summer was spent dealing with financ-
r ial and sociaI affairs such as buying chairs in the Ca— feteria, operating weekly socialevents for students.
Well, I'll be quite hon— est; at one point\I did feel like a booking agent and at other times, like a babysitter. I booked bands for Pigs for a while and since no one was kind e— nough to apply for October- fest Chairman, I ended up booking bands for that. As well, Tom Hayward, Ray Sha— lala and myself are plan— ning the schedule for the weekends activities. There— fore, if you should choose to call us a glamorized social Committee, I won't argue with you. No one has applied to handle Winter Carnival so we'll pro- bably end up doing that. A few people have volunteered to try to do something to improve the quality of life on campus as far as enters tainment goes. Dave Gareau and Rick Marcoux are setvi ting up our Discoteque night on Saturdays and Paul Broadbent is hoping to or- ganize \Coffee Houses. Rick Rowley and Brian Keaveny have done a fantastic job thus far with the movie club and my thanks go out to them as well. Kevin Newman has worked hard on social events and arrang- ing football trips. However as our. team loses, our
fans show their true colors-
For the UNB trip we had as bout fifty prople. Thus far we have ten people who want to go to St. FX.

This brings me to what I'd actually like to talk about; it may be easy to explain apathy in student union affairs by saying that it's not important and

the dead , drunken spirit at our NJWhistles, the lack of support for our newspaper, the failure of anyone to apply for some committees and the others being filled by acclamation. Does this explain the gen— eral dead spirit about this university? If we had a liquor strike like they do in Nova Scotia, the place would probably have to close down due to lack of interest. Could it be that nobody gives a shit about
- anything except getting
their degree, getting Out of here and getting a job?
If that's the attitude with
*which the majority of stu—
dents attend this univers- ity, my sympathy goes out to all.
I realize I haven't rep— orted much yet. I will brie- fly fill you in on a few more details here. Student Union is running efficient— ly and is financially more stable than it has been at any time in the past. The level of respectability of student union has risen quite highly, I believe, in the eyes of faculty and ad— ministration as we now get answers and consideration where in the past we got closed doors. We have the opportunity to take this small and new university a and mould it into something distinctly different, dis- tinctly PEI. HoweVer, at \ the present rate of intera est, I predict that this university will not see ye- ar 25. What can you do? .Have some pride in your school, in your education» in campus life, and in your self. The quality of the education, you receive is measured in the outside world by the reputation of the school from which it is received. By making a farce out of this university in its desire to graduate well rounded students, you make a farce of your own educa— tion. I may be wrong but it's something to think a—
