nearly three weeks had elapsed did the steamer again get to the Island shores. Such a disastrous time is not likely to hap- pen with the Stanley. She makes the run so quickly that even if a storm is brewing she can get to port ahead of it.

We arrived at Pictou at 9 a. m., and having taken a tour through the town, are now waiting for the express to Truro. Pictou shows marks of progress. The eXtension of the railway into the town makes considerable stir, and business men whom we saw report trade fairly good, altbough the lack of snow interferes greatly with general traffic.

One of the most noticeable improvements in Pictou is the large establishment of G. J. Hamilton & Son, where all kinds of bis- cuits, confectionery and other edibles are manufactured and sold.

Among the passengors by the Stanle to-day were Hon. A. J. Macdonald, Mr. Mills, of Summerside, Mr. McInnis, ot the P. E. Island Railway, and several others, all of whom were loud in praise of the Stanley and highly pleased with their mid- winter trip across the Straits.

The officers of the Stanley are evidently the right men inthe right position.
