MEN'S SOCCER

The men's soccer panthers picked up where they left off last year as they continued their dom- inancy of the Atlantic division. Recently the boys completed an undefeated weekend of solid soc- cer capturing a victory over the Mount Allison Mounties and set- tled for a hard fought tie against X-men of St. Francis Xavier.

Midfielder Martein Hakkers led the way for our panthers by capi- talizing on two of the teams nine scoring chances to give UPEI the 2-1 victory. Midway through the first half he took a brilliant feed from Jordan Chandler up the left side and used his speed the rest of the way to capitalize on the flat footed Mountie defender. Then, with the Mountie defence press- ing for the equalizer, Hakkers took another great pass from Ryan Anstey and put the game out of reach in the seventy-third minute.

Andrew MacCormack also gave a strong showing in the game allowing a lone goal in the sixtieth minute while shutting down the Mounties for the remainder of the game. UPEI out shot Mt. A by a 10-6 margin, but more important- ly out chanced them 9-3.

On Saturday, the men opened their season against St. FX with a 1-1 draw. Ryan Anstey was the only one able to find the back of the net against the Xavier keeper

as he scored the lone goal for the panthers in the first half. The only glitch in the panthers defence occurred five minutes prior to halftime as the X-men capitalized on a free kick from the side of the eighteen yard box, and were able to elude McCormack who played a remarkable game between the pipes.

Strong defence, stellar goal- tending and timely goals are the panthers specialty. Our men's soccer team isn't ranked number four in the country for nothing. Look for these boys to take a number of low scoring tight games this year. You can catch the panthers this weekend as they take on the also undefeated Reds of UNB on Saturday Sept. 20th.

WOMEN'S SOCCER The women panthers also got off to a good start last weekend by splitting their games against Mt. Allison and St. FX. The girls were able to pull out and impressive 2- 0 win over the Mounties while dropping their season opener to the X-women 1-0.

certainly not last, shutout of the season. Coach's Kim Hickox and Leisa Nogler entrusted the pan- ther women's backfield to four rookies who showed everyone they were ready for the varsity scene. With Lacey Hurry and Ellen Gaudet on the wings, Katie MacNevin in the middle and Melissa Campbell as sweeper, the four freshmen shut down the experience of the Mounties by stopping them from accumulating any real threats against Gillis.

In the 54th minute, Katie MacNevin lobbed a perfect cross to Liz MacPhail who capatilized on the game winner. Then it was the combination of a few juniors that sealed the victory for the panthers as Allison Frizzel put the wheels of Janelle Blanchard to work past the lowly Mt. A defend- er. :

However, it was a tentative start to the season as the lady pan- thers dropped the opener 1-0 to a tough St. FX opponent. The chances were limited but the girls played a fine defensive game.

Rounding out the middle of the conference, the women's soccer team look to inch their way up the standings one game at a time.

WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey panthers are another UPEI varsity team on the rise you may want to look out for. You can expect veterans such as Ambyr Gallant, Maureen O'Connor, Leslie MacNeill and Tracy Gairns to lead the charge for the panthers as they fight through a very small but capable division. With an even 3-3-3 record last year the girls are hop- ing to oust St. Mary's out of their top spot in the Atlantic division.

Standing tall between the posts this year for the girls will be vet- eran superstar, Ambyr Gallant with reliable backup from an always capable, Stephanie Holmes.

Revenge is just around the cor- ner for the panthers as they will host UNB for a weekend double- header on the 13th and 14th; the team that ripped up their ticket to the CIAU's last year in a devas- tating 2-0 loss. Because the sea- son is so short each and every game the girls play this year should have playoff implications written al! over them.
