It is no wonder that several of these brutes are lying in the dungeons of the prison- on-the-reef, guilty and convicted of the vilest and most revolting classes of crimes. But even such miserable creat- ures long for their homes and freedom, and are willing to risk their restitution with their lives. Only a few days be- fore I sailed from Honolulu, a band of these wild men broke from their quarters at night on the island of Mani, and seizing a small boat, quickly put out to sea, in the vain foolish hope of regaining their native islands and the companionship of their cannibal brothers, a couple of thousand miles away. Ono the whole, however, it is better to bring those uncivilizablé savages to the Sandwich Islands for the experiment ef Christianization, rather than to sead wholesome missionaries to them in their’ own Cannibal Islands, with the chance ahead of being sum- marily converted into ragouts tor the dainty tooth of a heathen, but hungry chief, and that of his smiling squaws and invited guests, tothe monotonous music of adrum corps of tom-toms. — .2- s—————

That crazy Emperor, Paul I. ot Russia, during one of his drives met a soldier whose countenance pieased him.

Unlackily for the new-made Colonel, the Emperor had to be back to the Palace early that morning. If the drive had continued a few minutes longer his chance companion would have been made Field Marshal. As it was he was obliged to content him- self with the grade of Major-General.

But a few days afterward the same poor wretch, picked up by the Emperor in exactlythe same way, had to go through the same gradations of rank, only in the reverse direction, and in balf| an hour, from being a Major-General, had to become a private soldier again.

IMMIGRANTS IN FEBRCARY —In Feb- ruary there arrived in the customs dis- tricts of Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Huroa, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York, Passamaqueddy, Philadelphia and San Francisco 15,862 immigraots.

An attempt is about to be made to ac- climatize sponges on the shoreseot France and Algiers. The chief difficulty will be in the transpleatation of the plants. It will be about three years before the trensplanted sponges will be fit to cut for sale. Sponyea feteh high prices, and the project is expeeted to pay well.

A Bia Wuase.—The owners of the whailing brig Lizzie P. Simmons,uow in Cumberland Inlet, have received advices to the effeet that the brig has captured a whale yielding 168 barrels of oii and 2,590 pounds of whalebone, and from
