UPEI History Society

History Society has got off to a busy start - we had - a corn boil last week - and this year’s executive has already been chosen, consisting of:

President - Vic Douse

Vice-President - Shayne Gosse

Secretary - Phillip Grover

Treasurer - Monica MacKenzie

Meetings take place on Wednesdays at 11:00 am in the History Lounge, room 301 of the Main Building, and everyone is welcome, whether a History Major or not.

We will be going bowling on Friday 12th, October at the Basilica in the Rec. Centre. We will probably be there around 3:00 p.m. but if you need a lift meet in the History Lounge at 2:30 p.m.

Thanks for your interest and we’ll hopefully see you at the meetings soon.

Awards Night By Kheng-Wee

The eleventh annual academic honours and awards dinner was held on Thursday, October 4. A welcoming speech was given by the Chairman

of the Board of Governors, Wendell Deagle. Following the speech was the presentation of prizes and awards. The guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Danny Coffin, who received a Bachelors degree of Science in UPEI, in 1970.

In his speech, Dr. Coffin talked about further education after the undergraduate degree. "Graduate school, as most of you will probably find out, is entirely a different kettle of fish. It is nowhere near being an undergraduate. It is very demanding, they simply keep piling work onto you until you would think it is impossible to survive. But you do. You cope and you manage. You become critical, very selective. I think that if I am to try and lead you into a kind of message, it would be that, yes, you should work very hard, yes, you should try to excel, but there is no critical path to where you want to go. Keep as many options open in your career as possible. Try and be broadly educated. Don’t be too focused. Go where your interests lies. Sample every possible education avenue that is open on this campus. If you tend to try to concentrate on one area too much, I think that you'll end up with a very narrow view Of life. And if all you know is one small area, than that won’t be enough. You won't be compassionate enough, understanding enough to deal with people. Strive for balance. Finally I would like to say that enjoy yourself while you are here. Work hard when you work and play hard when you play. Enjoy the friendship and the people that are around you. Know them well. Many things have changed, but what has never changed is that excellence is still its own reward."
