An unusual advertisement appears in a Vienna uewspaper:—“ A respectable married couple, ot whom. the husband is no dancer, desires to make the ac- quaintance of an equally respectable couple, where the wife is, no dancer, ia order to visit balls in company.”

Mrs. Samuel Bell, residing on the horold road, near St. Catherine’s, Ont., ran away on Sunday with @ young man named Doyle.. Mr. Bell had a few days previous received a sum of money from friends in Montreal ‘to take him and his) family to that city, which amount Mrs. Bell took with her. She is the mother of four childrev, all of whom she left behind.

The President of the French Republic has forwarded to the Department. of Marine one gold medal and oue silver ; the tirst for the superintendent and the other for the keeper of the West End light at Sable Island, in recognition of

the steamer A. S. H., of St. Maloae, on the 19th December. The medals will be

forwarded.

The front door and porch of the resi- dence of Policeman George E. Corner, of Cleveland, Ohio, was shattered with ‘dynamite a few nights ago. Corner last Tuesday night shot and killed a notorious} burglar and thief, George Foster, whose pal sought this method of obtaining revenge. Corner was out and his wife and child were univjured.

The total collections of inland revenue in the United States duricg the six months ending December 3ist, 1885, were $58,549,000, an increase of $2,029,000 overthe collections of the

Bank S“atistics. In December, 1874, the paid up eapi- tal of the Canadian banks was $66,309,- 225. In December, 1885, it was $61,763,280. In the meantime the cir- culation has increased from $23,257,718 to $32.363,993. The amount of specie held in 1874 was $6,879,372 against $6,710,059. Regarding spacie there has been a steady decrease the past year. In December, 1884, the amount held was $7,469,757; in November, 1885, it had fallen to $6,759,471; in December, to the figures given above. Dominion notes, howéver, increase. The Banks held at the close of 1874, $8,544,431 of these notes; at the close of 1884, $11,- 007,629 ; at the close of 1885, $12,446,- 329, which was, however, $450,000 less than at the close of the previous month, The general statement of the bauks is alleged to show a fair condition of busi- ness, the amount of overdue notes se- cnred and unsecured having decreased about one-half since December of Inst ear.

Davy Jones Filling His Locker.

A startling story comes from Morgan City, La., and is told by the third assist- aut keeper, Keech, of the ship shoal station lighthouse oc the Guif of Mexice. Ho says: “I was third, aud Mr. Duon was principal, keeper of the lighthouse. We had started the first and second assistant keepers up the Atchafalga bayou for provisions. They did not re- turn, and five days later their boat was seen a short distance from the lighthouse with only ope man aboard. | pulled out to her aud found the man a stranger. I took him back to the lighthouse a prigen- er, and we waited for our comrades to return. On the fourth night I. was awakened by blows, and found the stran- ger giving it tome witha hatchet. J shouted and he drew a revolver and fired. Dunn, my comrade, was on watch above, and he came to my assist- aace, but was shot three times. The stranger rushed aloft tothe watchroom, and we managed to barricade the door and to bind up each other's wounds.

A Paris despatch of the 29th alt, says :—Two thousasd striking employes at one of the iron works in Decazeville, department of Averyon, attacked the house of the manager of the works. They broke open the door, seized the mavager, threw him ut of a window aud trampled him to death. The strike grew out of the question of wages. The

Silas Shaver, the bigamist, sentenced at Belleville, Ont., to the penitentiary for three years, was interviewed at the jail Friday morning by his Liodsay wife, Misg Walsh. The Ontario says that she fondly kissed the scoundrel through the bars, and promised to be faithful to him during his absence. She wept bitterly aud is compliance with his wish gave him more funds. Their parting created quite a scene in the jail, the Lindsay bride bidding him an affectionate fare- well. Shaver, it is said, has three wives.

Dennis Jackson, a farmer living at Pilot Grove, Mo., severely whipped his gon, aged 14, for disobedience. At 4 a.m. the boy rose from his bed and got

parents’ reom, placed the muzzle o} the weapon against his father’s side and fired. The father was not killed instant- ly, and attempted to get a pistol from under his pillow. The boy again fired at bis father’s head, killing him. His mother was in bed at the time, and was slightly wounded. Jackson is said to have been a rough man. The young murderer made no attempt to escape and was arrested.

In Vienna 323 persons committed suicide in the year 1885, 21 more than in 1884. Of these 271 were males, 52 females ; the youngest was a boy of 12, the oldest a woman of 83 years. One hundred, including 7 women, hanged themselves, 75 men and 2 women shot themselves, 64 men and 12 women drowned themselves, 17 men and 17 women used poison, 12 men and 7 women jumped from a high place, etc. The largest number of suicides took place in Jannary and June, the smallest in August. Insanity, alcohol, disease, offended pride, poverty, fear of punish- ment and dissappointment in love, were

A horrible tragedy is reported to have occurred on the road between New Westminster cond Port Moody, B.C. A man named Walker had squatted on some land, and recently he took L. Rob- son, his partner, Smith, and another man named Jones to the place, wishing to dispose of his site. They arrived at the ranche late in the afternoon, and after dark Walker picked up a double- barrelled shot gun, and said he was goingto shoot a crow. One of the meu remarked it was rather late to go shoot- ing, when Walker said he might as well tell them his intentious—thag he was going to cook their goose for them, He then shot Robson through the breast, killing him instantly. Jones attempted to take the gun away from the murderer, and received the contepts of the second barrel in the leg, shattering his knee. Walker then made for Smith with a knife, but the latter succeeded in getting out of the cabin and escaped. Walker then lashed Jones to the body of Robson and fled. The wounded and dead men were found by constables who arrived a few hours Jater, The dead body of Walker was soon afterwards discovered, He is supposed to have killed himself. Sans ncaa ele titanate

Another Snew Slide.

Another snow slide horror is reported fromthe extreme south-western part of Colorado. Leonard Sutton, who has been at work in the Silver Lake basin in the La Plata mountains, reached Durango on the night of the 25th ult., with a frightful account of a slide which wrecked the cabin at the Daylight mine on the Tuesday before. While he was sitting in the cabin with Henry Thomas, his partner, and a fierce storm was raging outside, asiide fromthe moun- tain side suddenly struck the cabin and demolished it. Sutton says he was hurled some distance and buried 15 feet under the snow. He mannged to dig himself out, and set about to find Thom- as, who was buried about 10 feet deep. But the man’s leg was broken, and he was otherwise so badly injured that he could not sit up. Thomas begged Sut- ton to kill him and thus put bim out of misery. Sutton refused to kill him, and then Thomas begged him to leave at once and save himeelf. Believiog Thomas would not live more than a few minutes, he finally consented to leave him to his fate. Before his departure, Thomas requested him to return in the spring and bury his body, and send his movey and other property to bis sister, Miss Hannah Thomas, who resides in New York, ;
