EXPEKIENCE OF TWO SEAMEN RESCURD FROM A WRECK. The tales of the sea are many and varied, but ons of the saddest ever published in a Halifax paper is that published in the Herald, to hand last evening. The steamer Grand Lake arrived from St. John’s, Nfid., on Thursday, bringing among other passen- gers to the city two men named Hans Jaago and Hans Holte. They were seamen of the Danish brigan- tine Lovisa, which left Porto Plata, West Indies, on the 14h of December, bound to Havre, France. Shortly after leaving port bad weather was experienced. On the fourth day out the seas washed over the vessel, The captain gave orders to get the boats in readiness. The hurricane was followed by a calm, which was only of a few days’ duration. Again the sea rose in mighty waves, and the vessel was tossed about like a cork. On the Ist of January another hurricane was encountered. There was no let up in the bad weather. The cargo shifted, and on the following day the vessel was on her The crew crowded to the side of the vessel and held on to the rigging all day—the 4th of January. About midnight the foremast broke short off, causing the vessel to right. The waves were running very high, and the crew were obliged to take to the rigging of the mainmast. The weather was freezing cold. On the night of the 7th three of the crew could not hold on to the rigging any longer and dropped into the sea, The first to have his hands frozen was the mate, L. Petersen, and shortly after he disappeared beneath the waters. A Swedish sailor, Hilzs Jochund, then succumbed, and was followed by the cook, Walter Rohdies. The following day the captain died from ex- posure. His death grasp was so tight upon the rigging that the waves for a time were un-

They suffered great hardships. Daring the five daysin the rigging, food or water could not be reached owing to the waves rufhing over the decks. The be following the death of the colored man the weather moderated and the men came down from the rigging. To theic horror the men found that the water cask had been swept away. ‘Their thirst was terrible. Ou the following day there was a welcome rain storm and sufficient water was caught to last the men till rescued on the I6th January by the brigantine Kestrel. The provisions in the cabin were saturated with the salt water, but the men had no alter- native but to eat the stuff, which added to the intensity of their thirst.

Hamiton, Feb. 4. Mrs. Ellen Brown, of Toronto, who was so marvellously cured of Bright’s Disease by Dodd's Kidney Pills, is weli-known in Ham- ilton, having been in the hospital here where the authorities, like those of the Toronto in- stitutions pronounced her case incurable, Peo- ple who knew her here are surprised to learn that she is cured, as they thought she was in the Home for Incurables in Toronto, and never expected to see her outside that place.

An Omaha special of the 5th is as follows : There is some excitement in Jocal military circles over the prospects ot the repetition of the Sioux campaign in South Dakota Advices from Pine Ridge Agency, S D, indicate that serious trouble my be ex- pected there. The band of cli Chief Two Strikes last night killed four white men and now defy the police and military authorities to arrest them. Details from the scene of the dis turbances are meagre, because there is only one telegraph wire to the agency, and that is in poor working order as a result of the storm. The killing tuwok place at Humphrey's ranch, near the mouth of the White Clay Creek. Humphrey’s ranch is about twenty miles north-northwest of Pine Ridge agency and fifteen miles directly west of the Wounded Knee battle ground. Twe years ago there was considerable skirmishing in the neighborhood during the big uprising, and soldiers were stationed at the ranch for some time. ‘I'wo {Strikes band was held together and bas been vindictive of late, but the out- break ig a surprise. Telegrams have been sent to the Indian agents at Pine Ridge and Rosebud making inquiries about the troubie, and at 6 30 to- night the following was received from Post Trader Finlay at Pine Ridge, it having been telephoned over to Rushville. It was reported at the agency yesterday that white men had been killed by the In- dians. The acting agent, Captain Brown, sent some policemen to investigate the matter. They report that they found three white men kilied and one mortally wound- ed, who has since died, and he will be

The buildings of Mount Allison University have been placed at the disposal of the school, and will afford every fucility for classroom work. The various features of the session will, as usual, be very interesting, and it is greatly to be de- sired that as many teachers as can possibly do so will make arrangements to visit Sack- ville during the session.

Soctat.—Last Monday evening a Social in aid of the Albion Lodge, 1. O. G. T., at Albion Cross, was held at the residence of Daniel McLean, Esq. Although the night was very cold sbout ove hundred people were present, and all evidently enjoyed themselves immensely. An entertainment was given by the members of the Lodge, which, with the pertormance on the piano by Miss Griffin, our efficient music teacher, added greatly to the pleasure of the even- ing. Greatcredit is due to the ladies who worked sv hard to make the affair a success, Mr. McLean for his kindness in throwing open his house, and Mrs. McLean, who did all sbe could for the comfort of the guests. The proceeds amounted to about $3).

InsuRANCE Rares.—According to a4 re- cent despatch, Halifax is this year doubling the expenditure of its fire department, and connecting the water supply with the city by an additional main pipe. While this being done, scared by the recent fire in St. John’s, Nfld, have entered into « combine to increase the premium rates at Halifax by fifty per cent. A committee of citizens have been looking into the situation, and report that $23,500,000 of risks are carried in Halifax upon whick $175,000 premiums are annually psid, while during the last quarter of a century the average aumber of alarms sounded has been only forty-three per year. There have been only a dozen tires in that time with loases over $20,000, and the average annual loss during the whole period was only $15,000.

Since the interment of Mr, Biaine’s body at Oak Hill cemetery, the vandais and curiosity seekers have turned out in such force that it has been necessary to place a guard at the grove in order to protect it and prevent its being strip of the flowers placed upon it. Women are the chief offenders.

Among the Northwest's exhibite at the World’s Fair will be a pillar of coal from a mine near Edmonton taken from a seam twenty feet thick. The villar will be three feet in diameter and twenty feet high. The
