An inquest -was held at Musquash to-day on the body of Thompson D. MePharg, luinberman, aged 45, who died on Sunday. | He had been drinking freely on Friday at {several houses there. He had some fuss with one of his companions, and is alleged struck by a man named Andrews, though several witnesses at the coroner's inquest testified that Andrew’s hand was ;open when he hit McPharg. The deceased jteld Dr. McFarlane that a handspike had fallen ou him, and the ductor testified that only some violent injury would account for the condition in which he found the patient when called in. The jury returned a ver- dict of death from natural causes, but the people of Musguash are dissatisfied there- with, aud want the case thoroughly investi- gated,

French Politics. Paris, Oct. 23.

General Boulanger was present in the Chamber of Deputies to-day. Baron Sou- beyran stated that the enormous propor- tions of the public debt demanded a redue- tion in the government staff, and the sale of state railways.

M. Roche, reporter of the budget com- mittee, declared the criticisms were exag- gerated. It was not the French expendi- tures alone that we re increasing. Al} European budgets were augmenting. Eu- rope has been transferred into an immense iutrenched camp. France was not free in her movements; she was bound by fatality of events, and it was impossible to isolate herself. Ue appealed to the patriotism of the members of the Chamber to pass the budget.

Still Another Defaulter.

CLEVELAND, Ohio, Oct. 23.

The greatest excitement prevails here in financial and business as well as social circles over the reported defaleation of City freasurer Thomas Axworthy. Axworthy left the city on Sept. 28, going direct to New York city, from whence he is said to have left for Montreal on Sept. 29. Inves- tigation so far develops a shortage in the city funds of over $383,000, ands it is thought that further investigation will in- crease the amount. Axworthy has fled to Europe.

The Manitoba Trouble. Ottawa, Oct. 23.

Manitoba matters are quiet. The fight is realy between the Canadian Pacific and the Northern Pacific. The latter are using Greenway and Martin as cat’s paws, but the hot water from the Canadian Pacitic engine seems to have dampened their courage. No attempt was made yesterday to force a crossing for the Red River road, and all remains quiet awaiting the decision of the court regarding the injunction.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 23. The epidemjc is slowly ebbing out. Many new cases are reported daily, but the type is much milder. Deaths are rare. All Volunteer corps of visiting physicians will depart for their homes on Thursday. Resileut doctors can now handle the epi-

demic easily. New cases, 33; one death.

Rioting in Ireland. Dus in, Oct. 23. A riot broke out at Moy to-day between Orangemen and Nationalists. The police reinforced charged the mob with bayonets, Several policemen were iujured with stones thrown by rioters.
