These food materials are protein. needed for growth IMI the production of milk and eggs; minerals, for bone development and vitamins for health and dil- eaae resistance. Farm animals, like their masters must get the neces- eary proteins, minerals and vitame ins for maximum growth and health. Nature looks after the wild animals and birds but the domesti- cated animal is entirely dependent on the farmer for its food require- merits.

The old days of throwing a hand- ful of grain to thehens are past. Scientists discovered, for instance, that unless the laying hen gets suf- ficient egg making material in its feed. egg production falls off. By running countless experiments it was determined how much protein, minerals, vitamins and carbohy- drate (starchi a I\f‘I1 must get each day in its feed in order to produce a maximum number of eggs and at the same time maintain body weight and good health. Similar food demands are made by all the other classes of farm livestock. {he dairy cow produces milk which is high in protein and minerals and therefore the cow must get these materials in her feed for full pro- duction. .

Hogs too must get a balanced ration for maximum and profitable growth. The hog is the fastest growing animal on the farm. Growth depends on protein and therefore balanced feeding is essen- lal for successful hog production. University tests show that a heg fed a balanced ration will gain at the rate of one pound for every 3 1-2 pounds of feed. whereas‘ hogs fed nothing but grain. require five or more pounds of grain for eaco pound of gain.

The ad- vantages of this system were soon apparent and the idea met with such a wave of popularity that o- day there are over ‘I00 Shur-Galn Feed Service mills operating across Canada- manufacturing balanced feeds for poultry, hogs and cattle.

There are two main advantages to local manufacture- feeds are freshly made and this means that they are more palatable than feeds that ha\'e been in storage. Another advantage to fresh feeds. and prob- ably the most important, is that there is less danger of’ vitamin loss due to oxidation or the en- lyme action of the crushed grain.

The second great advantage to local mixing is reduced cost. This fact is very important at the prr sent time when increased grain prices have reduced the profit in livestock production. Grain, which makes up a large proportion of all balanced feeds, is either bought lo- cally or shipped from the West in low cos tcarload lotl.
