lrogen is much less in quantity, there being less than 15 pounds, but which in a free state, would2occupy a volume of 2800 cuble feet. The three other gases are nitrogen, nearly four pounds, chlorine, about twenty-six ounces, and) fluorine, three and a quarter ounces. Of the solids carbon stands at the head of | the metalloids, there {being forty-eight pounds. Next comes phosphorus, twenty-six ounces, and sulphur, three and a quarter ounces. Ihe most abun- | fant metal is calcium, more than three | pounds; next, potassium, two and a half sodium, two and a quarter ouness, and, lastly, iron, one and a quarter ounce. Itis needless to say that the various combinations made by these thirteen elements are almost in- numerable.

Thomas Etherington, an octogenarian, of Milton, Queen’s, is seriously ill. Only a few days since, he said that he never re- membered being sick a day in his life; he has had perfect health for over 80 years.

When a native of China is bitten by a mad dog, and symptoms of hydrophobia present themselves, the poor fellow is, ac- cording to custom in such cases, chained up by his hands and feet until death puts an end to his sufferings.

A company has been formed in Yar- mouth which will erect a new summer hotel there, to be ready in time for the reception of next season’s visitors. It is to cost be- tween $15,000 and $20,000, and will be one of the most modern and elegant hotels in the provinces.

Says the Pictou News: ‘‘A man nearly 94 years of age, from one of the rural dis- tricts, called at this office a few days ago to complain of the quality of liquors kept in Pictou at the present time.
