Mrs. P. relapsed beneath the folds of the blankets. and had one eye again well

coaved towards the realm of dreams, while the other was holding on by a very frail tenure upon the world of reality, when her car was saluted by the nibble ofu mouse. gnawing her chamber carprt.

dctests it is a mouse. As she heard the sound of the nibble by the window, sho arose again upon her elbow. and cried “51:09! Shot)!" energetically several times. The sound ceased, and she fondly fancied that her trouble was ever. Again she laid herself away as carefully as she would have lain eggs at forty-five cents a. dozen. when—nibble. nibble. nibble! — she once more heard the odious sound by the window.— “ Shoo ! " cried the old lady again. at the same time hurling hcr shot: at the spot from whence the sound praceedednvhcre the little midnight marauder was carrying on his deprcdntinns.

All again was silent. and the clock. giving an admonitory tremble, struck twelve.

Nibbln. nibble, nibble! -ug1in that sound. The old lady sigllcd as she

. hurled her other- shoe at her invisible annoyance. and “ shooing" was bootlcss. for the sound came again to her wakeful car. At this point her patience gave out. and conquering her dread of the cold. she arose and opened the door of her room. when. taking the light in one hand and a shoe in the other. she made a circuit of the room. and explored evcry nook and cranny in which a manic could on- sconcc himself. She looked under the bed, under the old chest of drawers. and under the washstand. and in Ike's boots and “sliced” until she could “shoo” no more.

It is the system that one adopts. and the want of system on the part of the other. that makes the difference between the thrifty farmor and the careless one. 11‘ you find a man's fields reasonably clcun and free from weeds; his pastures free from mulleius and such like growth. you will expect to find his barns keptin order. and would observe but little waste of f'ccding'substanccs, or other things about the prctniscs; you would find his heart ill his business; and it makes a wonder- ful difference at the end of the year whether this general system of economy is adopted or not.

A farmer who keeps his tools scattered about, and who suffers the bay to go to waste on the baru‘floor, will juatify it on the ground of want of time ; but the fact is. a reasonable degree of order and neat- ucss saves time; and not only that. but it makes the difference between success

makes a vast difference in the results of the year. for instance. whether a herd of" cows in a diary are regularly milked. rc- gularly fcd, and regularly turned out of the barn or not. Everybody at all con- versant with farm management knows that. In one case it is a steady. pcr

It is said that there is a point when patience ceases to bc a virtue; and this point was found by the venerable dame. Anger, disap- pointment. desperation. fired her mind with a new determination. She opened the door quickly and heard the mouse again fall from stair to stair, She went slowly down stairs. and saw the little black eyes looking at her rogncishly. A general skirmish then ensued until the mouse. in an at- tempt to dart. by her, presumed too much upon former success. He came too near her upraiscd foot. It fell upon his devoted head. and he was dead forever! Mrs. Partington gazed upon him as he lay before her.
