A very hopeful feature connected with the Canadian live stock trade is the order just passed in Council, exemptizg Canadian and American cattle from the objectionable clause jn the Duke of Ricamond’s bill respecting con- tagious diseases of animals. This clause re- quired the cattle to be slaughtered at the port of landing.
Tue exports from Grand River, Lot 56, thi® year, amounted to 20,290 bush. of oats, 67,672 do, potatoes, 1,973 do. turnips, 142 do. barley, 700 boxes preserved lobsters, besides a small quantity of pork, mackerel, beef, butter, hides, fencing, etc. That the exports there will in- crease when the dredge has finished her work, we confidently expect.
Apvice from Cuba, on the 26th ult., states that the barque ‘‘ M. J, Foley,” Gavin, mas- ter; was then taking in a cargo of sugar for Now York. The Alberton Pioneer says: ‘The above vessel was built about half a mile from this village, and when launched was con- sidered to be among the finest vessels ever built on the Islaud.
An explosion of nitro-glycerine and gun- powder recently occurred in the St. Bernard coal mines, at Earlington, Ky. The shock was heard for miles. A train of mining cars, mules and negro driver were blown to atoms. ‘There was a panic among the miners and their families for a fall hour, before the result was known.

MovEMENTS OF THE FisHING FLEEtr.—Only 20 arrivals have been reported at this port the past week, 3 from the Banks with 75,000 lbs. halibut, 4 from Georges with 50,000 codfish, and 2 from Bay St. Lawrence with light fares. There are two more Baymen to arrive, and one will winter in the Provinces. The fish market is quiet, and prices well sustained. Two of the Newfoundland flect have already sailed, and two more will sail to-day.—-Cape Ann Ad- vertiaer.
‘The schooner ‘‘ Corina H. Bishop” cleared from Georgetown on the 14th inst. to Glouces- ter, N. S., with 3,400 bushels potatoes by John Hughes. On the same date, the barque ‘*‘ L. De V. Chipman,” cleared from Souris for Queenstown, with 40,000 bushels oats and 600 pieces of deals, shipped by Wm. Welsh. On the 6th inst., the ‘‘ Florence Abbot” also sailed from Souris for Newport, U. 8., with 6,220 bushels and 39 bags of potatoes, by Haszard Bros., of this city.
INSTITUTION FOR THE Biixp.—The annual meeting of the Directors and Patrons of the Asylum for the Blind was held on Saturday night. The annual report was read by Mr. Wm. Compton. The Superintendent's report stated that 22 pupils had been in attendance during the year, 20 of whom resided in the In- stitution. Of the 22, 17 are Nova Scotians, 3 Newfoundlanders, avd 2 P. E. Islanders. The health of the pupils throughout the year has been excellent. This is mainiy due to system- atic exercise, nutritious diet and plenty of sleep. In the gymnasium, instructions were given by Instructor Ray, of H. M. 20th Regi- ment. Instructor Smith, of the 10lst Regt., has taken has place. The annual cost of each pupil in the Institution is about $150. The re- ceipts were $4,111.39. The following gentle- mén were chosen managers for 1879: James F. Avery, M. D.; John 8. McLean, M. H. Richey, Charles Fletcher, John Duffus, W. C. Silver, S. A. White, W. H. Neal, George Thomson, Wm. Compton, Geo. Mitchell, W. P. West.—Hzx. Herald.
Harvir’s Atmanac, FoR 1879, is full of useful information for all classes in this community. Among other novelties it con- tains a number of valuable cooking receipts, and ‘‘Herschel’s Weather Table.” is table is said to be constructed upon philo- sophical considerations of the attraction of | the sun and moon in their several positions respecting the earth, and is confirmed by the experience of many years actual obser- vation. The names of all local officials are giren correctly. There is, however, a slight error in the list of Railway officials. In it Mr. F. A. Dogherty figures as “‘ As- sistant Accountant.” In fact, there is no such officer; and young herty is the junior clerk in the Accountant's office. On the whole, however, the information con- tained in the Almanac is correct; and Mr. Harvie certainly stands unrivalled on this {sland as an Almanac maker.

The Cashmere contingent is ab- sent. It is said they required the formal annexation of the Chital of Little Cashgar and portions of Bafour and Sieat, which was sanctioned by the British.

The Porte and Great Britain are nego- tiating concerning British jurisdiction over foreigners in Cyprus. Great Britain re- cognizes the Sultan’s sovereignity over the Island, but denies its consular jurisdiction. The Porte learns that the Servians and Montenegrins are concentrated on their respective frontiers, and Turkish com- manders have been ordered to watch their movements. VeERsaILuEs, Dec. 17.
The Senate adopted the amendment pre- posed by M. Bulcastel, of the Right, re-in- serting in the budget the grant to aged priests, which was stricken out by the Chamber of Deputies. This action renders necessary the re-assembling of Deputies before the 31st December, to reconsider that portion of the budget.

The status of the strikes in the cotton mills is as follows : The card room hands of one mill at Oldham resumed at 5 per cent. reduction on Saturday, but in the spinning department the hands could not be got. On Monday five more limited company mils resumed, ostensibly at a reduction of 5 per cent., but with an arrangement that the 5 per cent. taken off should be invested in the hands of the trustees, and paid to the employees if they carry their point with other mill owners. Meetings of operatives are to be held to-day, to vote whether the members of the Operative Association may resume work at all the mills offering the foregoing premises. If the vote be favor- able, doubtless a large number of joint stock mills will resume.

An editorial in the ‘‘Times” says the an- nouncement of the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer that he would not proceed with the motion for a grant in aid of the sufferers of the Rhodope district, is an Opposition triumph over a sudden change of front; yet the motion became very simple when the reasons werere statod. It was thought by the Ministers that the distress revealed by the report of the Rhodope commission was a fitting object for Parliamentary aid, but it would be endecorate to make an act of charity the occasion of heated debate ; and the purpose of the Government was no sooner known than it was clear that it would be resisted on both sides of the House. The Chancellor thought it better to refrain from making the motion, even at the cost of the sarcasms with which he was rewarded last night. Many Conservatives were opposed to the grant of the public money ata time of such severe distress at home, and a large part of the Opposition would have seen in the act a political pur-

Lieulenant Cclonel Chas. J. Tottenham, Conservative, has been elected to Parlia- ment, from New Ross, ireland, by five ma- jerity, defeating Mr. Delaney, Home Ruler. After the declaration of the poll, the Home Rule mob paraded the town, throwing stones and otherwise disturbing the peace. The police are now patrolling the place.
