A Remedy for Diphtheria.

In view of the preva:ence in this Province of diphtheria we reprint por- tions of a letter written by Russias Minister to the United States, to a New York paper. We will be delighted to hear of the remedy being used with success -<-

In vies of the increase of diphtheria, I communicate to you a very simple remedy, which having been used in
Russia aod Germany, may prove ei-|
fective hore. For children one year old and under, the remedy, used inter- nally is :—
Natr, benoiec, pur. 5.0 solv. in aq. dis- tillat aq. menth, piper, ana 40.00 syr. cort. aur. 10.0.
For children from one to three years
old. from seven to eight grammes for 100 of distilled water, with same syrup; for children from three to seven years old, ten to fifteen grammes, and for grown persons from fifteen to twenty- five grammes for each 100 grammes of water. &&. Besides this, also the insufflation on the diphtherial membrance through a glass tube in serious cases every three hours, in light cases three times a day ot the vatr. benzoic pulver. For grown people for gargling adilution of. ton grammes of this pulver for 200 gram- mes of witer.
The effect of. the remedy is rapid. After twenty-four or thirty-six hours the feverish symptoms disappear com-

Petor Goelet, a bachelor, member of one of the oldest New York families, died Sun- day, aged 80. He leaves an estate est mated at twelve millions, principally real estate.
Emperor, William was petitioned by a synod of Prussian clergymen not to permit a military review on Sunday. His reply was :—‘* The Sabbath has been created for man, not man for the Sabbath. The Puri- tanical and Calvinistic conception of the Sabbath as a day of mortification and pens ance is entirely foreign to the feelings as well as to the taste of the German people.” Emperor William is, however, a religious man.
In an article on Sir Leonard Tilley’s visit to that city, the Free Press of London says : —~Few men, members of any Government, have ever taken the same trouble to obtain correct information as-a guide to legislation that has Sir Leonard Tilley, and few have shown the same unselfish and patriotic de- sire to promote the prosperity of the coun- try through this legislation. It is evident to every one that it is for no party triumph that he labors, and that he regards his ex- alted nosition as desirable only so far as he ean make it contribute to the promotion of this great object of his life—the prosperity, the progress and the development of the country.
Ax Imporrant IMMIGRATION SCHEME. =- A Fredericton despatch to the St. John Telegraph ot yesterday says : ‘‘Hans Peter- son, Esq., of New Denmark, is here for the purpose of submitting the following propo- sition to the consideration of the Govern- ment; That the Government reserve two hundred thousand acres of land lying be- tween New Denmark and the Tobique and extending towards the Restigouche and open it by running roads through it. If they willdo this, Mr. Peterson will guar- antee to bring out, during the next five years, ten thousand Danish emigrants who will pay for and settle upon the land. Some
of the land in question is in the hands of the Riverie du Loup Railway Company,
but we understand that they will dispose of iton reasonable terms. Mr. Peterson is of opinion that the tide of emigration from Denmark, Norway and Sweden can be turned toward this Province.” Susceptibility to alechel and tobacco is one of the most striking characteristics of the many evidences of American nervous- ness. We cannot bear these stimulants and narcotics as our fathers could; we cannot bear them as can the English, or Germans, or French; indeed, ali the Old World can both drink and smeke more than the Americans. Foreigners travelling and so- joarning here must be far more cautious than is their wont with the purest and mildest liquors; while Americans, when long abroad, can often partake of the native wines, and also of stronger liquors, to a degree that at home would induce intoxica- tion, perhaps lead directly to the symptoms ofaicoholism. In truth this functional malady of the nervous system, which we call inebrity, as distinguished from the vice or habit of drunkenness, may be said to have been born in Annerica, has been de- veloped sooner and far more rapidly than elsewhere, and here also has received earlier and more successful attention from men of science. The increase of the dis- order has forced us to study it and to do- vise plans for its relief.

I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy eitects seemed to me to be “‘too good to true.” 1 was afilicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Cireular I saw my case described in many par- ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, i would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. “My health and spirits were seriously affected.
