The “Northern Light.”

Tue ‘Northern Light” left Pictou on Tuesdsy morning at 7 o’clock, and she has not yet arrived at Georgetown. Some anxiety respecting her is felt; but we hope and trust that she is safely moored in an icefield.

THE STORM.

Tue storm of yesterday was general— stopping trains, blocking roads, suspending telegraphic communication, blowing off sign- boards and slates and effectually isolating the residents of the city. At ten o'clock yesterday morning the wind was ‘“ north,” and blew at the rate of forty miles an hour. Tc snowfall was heavy; and some days must elapse before regular communication can be restored. At seven o'clock yester- day evening the wind forced a number of shingles off the north end of the gas-holding room at the Gas Works. Shortly after- wards a board was also lifted off by force of the wind. Men were sent to repair the damage, but they had scarcely arrived ai the place when a violent gust of wind en- tered the building through the hule sc made and carried off the roof, leaving but afew rafters standing. Parts of it were carried over the sheds at the south side o! the yard, and landed beyond the railway track. Heavier parts fell in the yard.

A large warehouse, owned by Juhn Long- worth, Esq., situated on Grafton street. near the railway track, was also damaged by the storm. It is built on piles and has, for some time, been used as a lumber shed, hay-press, etc. Yesterday evening the wind carried it about a fout-and-a half from its foundation, materially injuring its frame. It has at present a great leaning towards the south.

The gravel roof of Mr. Hooper’s building on Malpeque Road, was greatly injured— the wind lifting part of the felt and pitch ef it. Chimneys were blown down in various parts of the city; and, in many eases, injured the roofs on which they fell. The high chimney in the rear of Mr. W. A Weeks’ residence fell, injuring the roof considerably. Chimneys on the residences of John P. Irving, Esq., Wm. Train Dispatcher, report :—

In Tignish, Souris and Georgetown it stormed heavily this morning. In some of the cuttings the snow is piled up to the height of twenty feet, and is closely packed. The Tignish train was disabled this morn- ing when only a short distance out; she had to put back for repairs.

The Georgetown train has reached Car- digan.

At Souris, in the morning, the men could not work owing to the storm , this afternoon the train is working through the ‘‘ Rock Cut”—a short distance this side of Souris—snow sixteen feet deep.

The train which left Charlottetown this morning has been working through * Pierce’s Cut”—near Winsloe Station— snow twenty feet deep for a distance of 200

The Bible Christian Church was comfort- ably filled on Wednesday evening, by a very appreciative audience, to hear the Rev. W. 5. Pascve’s lecture on the ‘‘ Sol- dier Priest, why he foughtand how he fell.”’ Calainituus times, said the Rey. lecturer, are often productive of great men. A man’s fame, however great, may be either produc tive of good or evil. He may be as famous for vice as for virtue. He may be as re- markable for selfishness as for patriotism ; for the harm he infiicts as for the good he does. Men who nobly resent all wrong do- ing—unselfish men who throw themselves into the path of danger that weaker men than they may not perish. Patriotic men who sacrifice their all for country and for God. Heoric men who turn their backs a no difficulty, and blanch at no danger.

The publication of the cipher despatches was intended to kill Tilden, politically, but it seems to have had the very opposite re- sult. It has, in fact, if we are to credit the statements of both Republican and Demo- cratic journals, been the means of resur- recting Tilden and placing him before the public as the candidate of the Democratic party for the next campaign. This isa curious result, for there is no denying the fact that the cypher telegrams and the pro- posal to buy electoral votes in the South were brought very near to him—his own nephew, who lived in his house, being di- rectly involved, and Mr. Manton Marble, who did not like, as he said, ‘‘to commit Tilden” with certain doubtful parties, hav- ing been proved to have taken a hand in the financial negotiations for the purchase of the Presidency. But in proportion to the alarm which was felt among Tilden’s friends at the danger of their favorite has been their exultation and triumph at his escape, and their joy has been contagious and has spread generally throughout the Democratic party, many of whom were be- fore either indifferent or unfriendly. This is but natural. Mr. Tilden will, therefore, apparently be the Democratic candidate. Of course the Republicans laugh to scorn his pretence that he is innocent in the matter of the cipher despatches. The N. Y. Tribune says :— is

Blaine’s opportunity has apparently passed away. Conkling is strongin New York, but weak everywhere else, and he is cor- dially disliked by the Hayes Republicans. There is no other prominent Republican talked of as a candidate, and it is felt that Grant is the only man who can thoroughly unite the Republican party and restore dis cipline to its ranks. It is therefore highly probable that Tilden and Grant will be the next Presidential candidates of the two great political parties. —St. John Telegraph.

The British and Irish Peerage.

The whole body of the British and Irish peerage comprises at the present moment 580 members : 5 royal dukes, 28 dukes, 33 marquises, 205 earls, 57 viscounts, and 352 barons. The creations of the dukes vary from Norfolk 1483, to Westminster in 1874, of the marquises from Winchester in 1551 to Abergaveny in 1876; of the earls from Crawford in 1398 to Cairns in 1878, of the viscounts from Hereford in 1549 to Cran- brook in 1878, and of the barons frota Le Despencer in 1264 to Norton in 1878. But, inasmuch as peers of Scotland, although they have precedence of peers of Great Br.tain.
