Souris Sidewalk Social,
The followirg is a feeble attempt to dis- cribe the most pleasant public gathering that has taken place in Souris for some time. Although the evening was most disagreeable, and as # consequence pedes- trians suffered, yetas the ideal chair man, Mr. J. G. Sterns, remarked, it emphasised the great necessity of the new sidewalk leading from tbe Presbyterian church to the station which has been a long felt want and for which this social has been given. The programme was well arranged and each selection promptly given. The Souris orchestra, which is bard to beat, we may say on this occasion excelled themselyee. A Scotch reading by Mr. Carr, with an encore, added greatly to the already fine programme. The sale of pretty baskets, together with the pleasing mannerof our Mr. Clark as auctioneer, made this part a most important feature, and the handsome sum of $53.60 was realized. We must say the young ladies at whose hands the social was given, namely, Mise Muttart, Miss Clark and Miss Nellie Sterns, deserve the highest credit. It is only acother proof of their capability as well as their popularity in Souris. When those popular yeung ladies with their sociable mannere at al! times and in all places take charge of anything it is bound to be a bouncing success.

The British in India.
Prot Goldwin Smith had a letter in one of the New York papers afew days ago replying to an article censuring British rule in India. Iv his short letter Prof. Smith said that he felt sure that an im- partial survey will lead tothe conclusion that for the last century the spirit of Bri- tish government in India has been benefi- cent, and that the administration has been en the whole very able and remarkably pure. Its one fatalaad incurable yice is, he thinks, that it is the government of the stranger. He said :-~“[ lave had occa sion for historical purposes to study the history of British India, and [think have studied it imeartially.
