The Presbyteriaa Parliament, PRINCIPAL GRANT ELECTED MODERATOR OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

The General Assembly of the Presby- terian Church in Canada convened in St. Andrew’s Church, Toronto, in fifteenth an- nual session, on the evening of the 12th. The retiring Moderator, Rev. W. T. Me- Mullen, D. D., of Woodstock, Ont., con- ducted the opening exercises, and preached from the words of Acts xx., 24, speaking of the ministry as to its origin from Christ, its work to preach the gospel in its purity. He dealt at some length with the question of the Apostolic succession, showing that presbytery and bishop are not distinct and different offices. He also showed that the minister must labor in the spirit of com- plete self-surrender. A large audience at- tended the service and listened with closest attention. The number of commis- sioners present was large for the open- ing, and indications are that the Assembly will be one of great interest. The great question which is commanding so much attention here will no doubt receive atten- tion as it has done in the Episcopal Synod now meeting. A reference to it in sermon called out applause in the assembly. The number of elders from the Maritime Synod is very small, only 25 Ministers an- swered roll call to-night. A few others may still come. Three Presbyteries, Wal- lace, Lunenburg, Shelburne and Newfound- land are not represented. Halifax Presby- tery has the largest number—six ministers and elders. The names of Drs G. M. Grant, and John Lang were proposed for moderators. The assembly refused to allow Dr. Grant to withdraw his name and the vote being taken he was ‘elected, and was led to the chair amid applause. He made no speech. Replies to loyal address- es were laid on the table. Also papers on public instruction from the dioscesan synod of Toronto now meeting. The business

The News From Johnstown.

JOHNSTOWN, June 12.—Not since the fatal Friday of the flood has this stricken place given more resemblance to a_ silent city of desolation, a habitation of the dead, than itis to-day. This is owing to the | temporary relinquishment of the searching party for the dead and clearing away the wreckage on account of the discharge of all workman at six o'clock last evening. Of course by this afternoon many hundreds of men will be toiling again under control of General Hastings; in fact, up till last evening, Phillip Flynn, who is to superin- tend the work and laborers under the gov- ernment, had signed about eight hundred. As each man is paid, if he does not desire to remain here and continue work at $1.50 per day and pay for his own eating, he is escorted to the train in waiting and furnish- ed with transportation to his home.

Work upon the ruins has been at a stand- still all day. To-morrow morning General Hastings expects to have 2,500 men busy. Provisions and supplies continue to come in freely. There is little change in the health situation, Ten bodies were recover- ed to-day. The bureau of registration has reported to-day 15,578 survivors registered. The number of bodies recovered is 1,192, of which 628 have been identified. It took all day to pay the men so farat work. Not over 100 to 125 are doing anything. When it was found thai few men intended iv re- main to work for the State at $1.50 a day and board themselves, it was announced they would be paid $1.50 and furnished rations as before. The notice was too late, as but comparatively few reraained.

The Latest Railway Horror.

Our exchanges to hand this morning give iurther particulars of the disastrous rail- way accident in Ireland, referred to in Tue EXAMINER'S despatches yesterday. The ,;excursion party included ministers, teach- ers, the parents of some of the children and afew other adults. The passengers | give different accounts of the accident, but 'all complain bitterly of the stupidity of those in charge of the wrecked train who, !they say, tried to block the wheels of the ‘detached cars with pebbles. The train ‘consisted of fifteen carriages, The bulk ‘of the children were in the front portion of the train. Only about a dozen children were killed. The majority of the victims are about 20 years of age, They were in jthe last carriage, which was completely ‘smashed. Many occupants jumped from the windows and escaped with slight in- juries before the collision. The passeng- ers on the hind train were not injured. All the bodies have been taken from the wreck. The tvtal killed is 72; 64 have been identified. Ataformal inquest the magistrate said it appeared that there had been most culpable negligence. The num- ber injured is about one third the entire number of the passengers and many are ,certain tosuecumb to the effects of in- ‘ juries, | —_—-

Barbarous Natives.

| Late advices from Auckland, New Zea- land, say that the steel ship Altmore, bound from Sydney to San Francisco, struck a reef off Fiji Island oa the night of April 22nd. The crew attempled to land, but were prevented by natives. The nexc day, the second mate with several passen gers, including a woman and four children and six of the crew, left in the lifeboat and cutter for the island of Suva, 100 miles distant. As they had not reached that pcivt up to lateet advices, it is feared that they were drowned. The captain and remainder of the crew were taken off| by a schooner, except R. B, Turnbull, chief | engineer, who was drowned.

North Lake Notes.

‘Tie farmers in this vicinity are about completing their spring work, and every one seems satisfied thac the husbandman is likely this year to reap abundant fruit for his labors.

The lobster factory at No. 1 is still in full blast. Late storms have interfered with the traps, and the catch has fallen off some in consequence.

Between lobster, gasperaux and trout fishing ..r folks have not been idle of late. Every one knows by thistime that North Lake is an excellent ;place for trout, no stream on the Island containing more speckled be uties than are to be found at the head of the lake. And this leads me to say, just here, that one of our enter- prising men, Patrick McInnis, Esq., who by the way is a genuine Napoleon of the fly and rod, has erected on the margin of the lake, a neat little cottage for the accommodation of sports- men frequenting the place. The idea is a good one. ‘The :ottage looks cosy and in- viting. Those in search of health, pleasure and jots of trout will please make a note of this and govern themselves accordingly.

St. Catherine’s Burying Ground.

The present condition of this old burying-place, the recipient of the last sacred remains of the venerable pioneer fathers who settled, and with Leonine courage faced the forests of West River, with their families, and leaving cultivated and clear farms for their descendants, is discreditable, disgraceful. To see a forest of trees growing over the graves, head- stones covered from sight, an accumulation of debris for years left there, is a reproach and a standing disgrace. Let, therefore, everyone interested, or whose dead are buried here, come with a hearty will on Monday, the 8th day of July next, for the purpose of clearing and putting in good order St. Catlerine’s Burying Ground. A few carts, hoes and axes will be required.

Germany and Russia. THE CZAR’S BLUSTER—LABOR TROUBLES IN BERLIN.

Prince George, the Czar’s favorite son and probably his successor, in view of the weak brain and general debility of the Czarewith, will soon begin a tour of the world, starting at Paris, where his presence is intended to mark the Czar’s adhesion to the French Alliance.

A despatch from St. Petersburg to the Cologne Gazette says that the Czar told the Shah, and hotly too, that if while in Eng- land he should make any concessions un- favorable to Russia, 100,000 soldiers now on the frontier would be made to march into Persia.

The Volksblatt announces combined action among the workmen on the royal estates, coachmen, stablemen and gardeners for increased pay. The}Emperor has al- ready ordered that the wages of the mar- ried men be raised. ‘Twelve thousand masons have gone to seek work in the country, only nine thousand being left in Berlin. The police are more offensively active to suppress workmen's meetings everywhere.

Lonpon, June 12.—It is stated that Gen. Boulanger has written a letter in which he says the Boulangist documents recently obtained by the authorities of Paris must have been secured through the agency of some person or persons who betrayed their trust, as only aselect few know of their existence.

Paris, June 12.—It is estimated that 300,000 persons visited the exhibition yesterday.

Wasnineron, June 12,—The proctocol of the Berlin conference reached Washing- ton on Monday night and was opened by Secretary Blaine yesterday morning. Pend- ing official consideration of the complica- tions which appear to be involved in the text of the proposed agreement, nothing detinite can be learned about the ultimate instructions to our commissioners. Mr. Blaine spent several hours in conversation with the the president last night upon the subject. The conference ended without the president having reached the con- clusion. The president does not desire to approve the exactions of Germany in the matter of indemnity.

Woopstock, June 12.—A three-year-old son of Charles Manuel of this town was drowned in the Maduxnekeag this after- noon. He was lasi seen alive by some of his companions near Davis’ mill pond. No one saw him fall into the water, but some time after he had disappeared his hat was found floating in the water and after some hours’ search the body was found near the mouth of the strewm, having floated over the mill daw.
