should be taken with regard to the insub- ordination of servants at the smallpox hospital, All members of the Board were | present. The insubordination complained | of was the refusal of letter from the Chairman of the Board of Health to Mr. Jennings, keeper of the} hospital. This letter contained a request for Mr. Jennings t» send the hospital team into the city to take out a quantity of old cloth- ing and refuse from intected houses in the city. Mr. Matthew Allan carried the let ter to the Asylum, but O'Hare, the servant, refused to take it. The consequence was the Board of Health was obliged to hire a horse to do the work, b/it shortly after the Asylum authorities sent the team as at first r quested, The refusal of the servant to cerry the letter to the keeper is explained by the fact that Mr. Jennings does not for the present wish to receive any notics to qnit from the Board of Health, and orders have been given the servants not to convey inv communications whatever to him from that quarter. The fort is therefore safe.

A motion was then carried, though it was not put in writing, to the effect ‘that we, the long suffering Board of Heath, must nobly bear our afflictions and grant the supplies necessary to c!ose up the hospital as quick- ly as possible,”

1875-9 inclusive, was 1,820 failures, with liabilities of $26,460,000. For the six years, 18805 inclusive, the annual average has been 1,045 failures, with liabilities of $11,000 000. Jonsidering the increased uamber of traders during the latter period, the improvement is in the highest degree satistactory. Had the ratio of bankrupt- cies that occurred during 1875-9 been main- tained until now, we should have had about 5,000 failures with liabilities of $95,000,000 more than we have had. In other words our business calamities would have been 150 per cent. greater than they were Yet people who, during the former period, pro- fessed to be perfectly satisfied with the con dition of the country, and persistently declared that Canada was then fairly pros- perous, are now weeping and howling with- out eessation over what they cal! ‘‘ the deplorable condition” of the country! A spirit of attraction, he contends,reveals in the American union and a spirit of repulsion in Ireland, Earl Cowper continues to in- sist that the Irish agitation is mainly agratian and predicts a more formidable strike against rent than has yet been seen. Prof. Goldwin Smith, of Canada, in the London Times, touches a similar note. He affirms the Irish were not voting on a political question, but simply for freedom from Imperial restraint in completing the spoilauva of landlords. He believed the last election was carried, not by free suffrage, but under a pressure of the terrorist organi- zation wielded by a dictator and aided by foreign money. Trevelyan’s speech on Wed- nesday advocated large concessiuns, and allowing the Irish control over education, public works and all municipal expenditure —practically complete iocal government, police excepted. Sir Charles Dilke has again spoken in similar sense. On the whole, there is a growing conviction in Eng- land that there can be no scheme for an Irish Parliament which does not involve an ultimate separation. The Conservative silence has been broken by Mr, Webster, Attorney General, who declares that Lora Salisbury will tolerate no truckling with ideas tending to the establishment of a separate parliament in Ireland, Neither Gladstene nor Parnell utters a word. No-
body vemtures to predict the course of events on the assembling of Parliament. The present theory is that Parlie- ment will open with a Dutch aue- tion, the Tories trying to get turned out and the Liberals doing their best
to keep them in. All the leaders of tle Irish party, except Parnell and Biggar,have expreesed their views. It wasimpssible to reach Parnell, but the New York Sun's correspondent finally traced him to Ba‘h and had an interview with him. Mr. Parnell stated that ithe Nationalists would demand and be satisfied with nothing less than the erection of Irish Parliament, fully empowered to legislate for all Ireland’s affairs and interests. He characterized the Duke of Argyle’s argument as ‘*bosh” and unworthy of even such an hereditary land- lord and aristocrat. He ridiculed the fierce opposition Ulster Orengemen, and it was or- ganized and paid for by the landlords. The following closing senieuce of the interview is significant.

a A Fine Instrumunt.
DESCRIPTION OF THE GRAND PIANO USED BY MR. WAUGH LAUDER LAST NIGHT,
Tho instrument used by Mr. W. Waugh Lauder at his musical recital last night was a grand piano from the musical warerooms of Mr. W. Halle, Masonic Temple. It was manufactured hy Messrs. O. Newcombe & Co., of Toronte, and is probably without excepticn the finest instrument that has ever been used in public in this city. The nearest approach to an instrument of this kind heretofore bas been the ‘ Baby Grand,” which could not in any way com- pare with the ‘‘Grand.” The tone of the piano was exceedingly rich and full, and at the same time pure and totaily free from the harsh or foreign sounds which some- times spoil the effect of the best in- struments. From the manner in which Mr. Lauder handled the ‘‘Grand,” the action was shown to be elastic and respon- sive—In fact, perfect. Mr. Lauder had it at all times under complete control, and its effect in the more powerful passages was simply wonderful. So much for the aciion and tone of the instrument. Its outward finish and appearance is quite in keeping with its musical capabilities. As it stood upon the platferm in Victoria Hall last night it had a most imposing and ele- gant appearance. It is certainly @ magni- ficent instrument.—London Adv.
