The Parliamentary committee which is engayed in examining the circumstances ‘attending the imprisonment of the High Sheriff of Dublin, Mr. Edward Dwyer Gray, hes brought to light some extraordinary facts in referance to the administration of justice in Ireland.

Nothing important occurred in the com- mittee until Mr. Johnson, the official short- hand writer employed by the Crown, was produced to prove the correctness of the offi- cial report of the proceedings in Green Street Court House on the 16th of August, when Mr, Gray was committed for contempt. Mr. Johrson was at one time connected with the Dublin Daily Lupress,a very pro- nounced organ of the Irish landlords, and is a person enjoying the fullest confidence of the Dublin Castie avthorities. Early in the Land League movement he became the object of much popular hostility on ac- count of appearing as a Crown witness against some of the Land League leaders who were arrested on charge of sedition, in Mayo while the land agitation was still nits infancy. Mr. Johnson's character as a loyalist is, therefore, beyond question. This circumstance adds importance to the extraordinary story elicited by Mr. Sexton in the course of his cross-examination of the cfficial shorthand writer, and, which, perhaps, has no parallel even among the strange romances which abound in the judicial history of Ireland.

HANGED WITHOUT WARRANT. It will be remembered that some two months ago Patrick Walsh was put on trial, charged with having murdered a neighbor who had reridered him- self obnoxious by land grabbing. The evidence against Walsh was circumstantial, and was rebutted, but ineffectually, by the evidence. of a number of his friends, who swore to an alibi in his defence. On his first trial in Dublin the jury disagreed, but a second jury, composed wholly of Dublin. Protestants, found Walsh guilty, In due course he was exeented, and died solemnly protesting his innocence of the crime for which he was sentenced to death.. This fact produced a painful impression in Ire- land, which is likely to be revived by the astounding statement made to thé Parlia- mentary committee to-day by Mr. John-

The Markets.

OATS.

The oat market in England still main- tains considerable firraness. The high price of maize makes it necessary for large cen- sumers to turn their attention é0 other ‘sorts of fodder; consequently, we hear ‘that cargoes of P. E. Island oats, of, fair average quality, would meet with a ready sale at from 18s. 3d. te 18s. 6d. per quar- ter of 304 lbs to the bushel, for Channel di- | rect, and about six pence better for French ports. There is a very fair demaud for oats in the Maritime Provinces at low prices— 40 cts. in Hahfax and 42 in St. John. Buyers here therefore cannot make a large

age and forward the stock by rail. The price quoted in Charlottetown is from 33 to 34 cts. per bushel. But small quantities are coming in.

POTATOES.

The market for potatoes in Boston is steady. Prices are not high; yet shippers ‘are realizing a fair profit. The arrivals in that city ae large, and the quality gener- ally good. Price quoted for Early Rose is Other varieties from 60 to 70 cents. In Charlottetown potatoes are coming in slowly. Early Rose bring from 20 to 25 cents, and other varieties from 18 to 22 cents.

Eggs are scarce in Charlottetown. But few are coming in. The market in Boston for fresh stock is active, and price of P. E. I. is from 28 to 30 cents.

PORK.

The recent high price of Pork has given way, and a constant decliue has taken place In New York prime mess on the spot is sold at $21.00, and in Montreal the same brand sells at the same price. A telegram received from Newfoundland, also shows that the price is weakening there and asharp decline is expected, when any quantity reaches the market. The price quoted in Charlottetown is from 6} to 7j. Buyers careless.

Walsh was never sentenced to death. The fact was elicited by the following questions put to Mr. Johnson by Mr. Sexton, the meinber for Sligo :—

Mr. Sexton—Were you present in Green Street Court. House during the second trial of Patrick Walsh--the trial which ended in his conviction for murder ?

Mr. Jonnston— 1 was present during the whole of the commission,

Mr, Sexron—-Did you hear the judge pass sentence on Patrick Walsh ?

Mr. Jounson—I did.

Mr. Srexron—Did he sentence Pairick Walsh to be buried within the precincts of the jail?

Mr Jounson— He did.

Mr. Sexron—But did he sentence Walsh to be hanged ?

Mr. Jonnson—No ; he did not.

Mr. Srexron—Did he, in fact, omit. the words, ‘‘that you be hanged by the neck until you are dead ?”

Mr. Jounson— He did.
