An opening bid of two notrump is made on the same type hand none notrump, only much stronger. The distribution must be balanced -- no singleton or void - and there must be at least one stopper in each suit. it

To open with two notrump, the hand must contain 22 to 24 points.

An opening bid. of three notrump .ls made on a hsnd of the same type. but containing 35 to 2'1 points.

If your hand is of the notrump type but counts 19 to 21 poinu, it is too strong for an opening one notrump and too weak for .an opening two notrump. Such hands should be opened with a suit-bid or one.

Raising a Two-Notrump Opening

if partner opens the bidding with two notrump, raise him to three no- irump if you have from 3 to 8 points. With 9 or 10 points. raise to four notrump; if partner has a maximum opening bid (24 points) your combined strength is 33 or 34 points and you are in the slain zone. Even if his bid was based on the minimum 22 points, the part- nership will be in no danger at the four-level. (With a minimum, part- ner will of course pass to your double raise).

With II or 12 points, raise part- ner's two-notrump opening direct- ly to six notrump, .

with 15 points, raise the two no- trump directly to seven notrump.

Raising a Three-Notrump Opening

Since an opening three-notrump bid shows 25 to 27 points, you may invite a slam if you have 6 or 7 points, and bid a slam if you have 8 or more points.

As a rule, and particularly at rubber bridge, the raise of any rio- trump openintr is given on a balanc- ed hand. with a long, biddabie suit of your own, it may be better go take the nontrump out to that suit. Parlcularly at match-point play, however. your inclination should be strongly toward raising partner's notrump rather than showing your st(;it,,unicss your hand is unbalanc- c .
