EXAGGERA’I‘ION

We publish elsewhere in tltis issue a. letter by Mr. Philip 1.owe,-)lurray itlvcr. with reference to tile charge recently made by a resident clergyman to the effect tltat titere were a dozen places in the village that were selling liquor. and commenting upon the criticism of this charge in a later issue.

We have no first-hand knowledge of the conditions re- ferred to and can only regret tltat the controversy has arisen. We understand there are only between 30 and 40 residences in the village and when the statement was pubv licly made that twelve of these. or about one-third of the whole village. were selling liquor. it at once placed the heretofore unpretentious village of Murray River on a level with the tough places in the "wild and wooly west." We believe the statement was a grave exaggeration and not literally meant by the reverend gentleman who made it. That it was resented by the people of the village is not to be wondered at. but the consequences that may follow an unguarded statement such as this are usually very ser- ious. To the great detriment of the temperance cause in this province many such statements have been made by no doubt sincere and well-meaning men but the evil that fol- lows such statements is iucalculable. Strange to say the enemies of temperance attd the liquor interests generally greedin and fluently quote these exaggerated claims anti unfounded charges made by temperance reformers. aitd there are instances on record when the good intentions of reformers elsewhere have sadly miscarried because of un- guarded and exaggerated statements made by temperance advocates in Prince Edward island, the only Prohibition province in t‘ztnada. '

it is pleasing to note that at the recent Methodist Con- fereut'e at Kettsington there was no wild and uncalled for

condemnation of the Government for alleged laxity in the administration of the prohibition law but on the other hand testimony was borne to the fact that we have, the heat prohibition law in t‘anada. What is necessary to make the law effective is that. people who have first-hand knowledge of the contravention of the law should make it their duty to communicate the facts to the prosecutor and, failing action by him. to the Attorney-General.

We strongly endorse the recommendation of the Method- ist (‘onference that pastors and other church workers should instil into the minds of the parents the absolute necessity of \\" 'ning their children against the evils of strong drink. It is just as necessary to keep this before the rising generation as is instruction in morality and what is known as the social evil. Where there is indif- ference on the part. of parents anti teachers the chances are that the rising 'ent-ration will be 1ti and careless in the uhscl'tancc of the law.

The Murray ltivcr incident. only emphasises the neces- sity of guarding well the good‘name of the province and avoiding statements anti charges that. if true. would con- dctnn not only our prohibition law but would cast a very serious reflection ttpon all (‘hristian activity in the dis- trlcts concerned. -

In the New York Sun of a late (late. sortie especially iti- terestiug facts are given with reference to methods adopted in the great Ford factory. whose employees number about H.000 men. methods that have transformed criminals ittto useful and respectable citizens and brought sull’erlng and neglected illltl starving families out of the slums of the city to live happy lives In decent surroundings and with a bread winner whom they could trust implicitly.

The method is so simple after all. It is the method adopted 1900 years ago when the llcalcr placed His hand upon the leper. when lie took the outcast by the hand. when he showed real tangible human sympathy. not in words alone. but in doeda.’

Mr. Ford's factory Is a large one. dealing with hundreds of men. but the problem is the same right here In Char- lottetown. as in the City of New York. The hundreds of men are Individuals and whether there are hundreds or dozens. the temptations, the pitfalls. the need of kindly human sympathy and help is the same. The Ford institu- tion is so large as to necessitate the maintenance of a sociological department which consists of eighty men under a supervisor who Is "assisted by every many. in the factory from Mr. Ford to the humblest worker about the shops." This sociological department. we lake. It. If! to the great factory. what the church Is to the. ordinary community and It certainly does a large part of the work that the church is expected to do. Here is an extract from the Sun‘s report:

a bank burglar or a holdup man. a forger or a. murderer, but if he displays an inclination to do right and to go to

work. he may be pretty sure that within a day or two he will be wearing a Ford badge and have a place in the fac- tory. Past records don‘t count and promises for the future' are not taken into consideration, and there is always room for one more in this big plant.

But a. successful applicant is watched. Nobody realizes more than these people do that promises of reform are easily broken and that good intentions have their assigned place in the infernal regions unless they are supported by actual performances. Every one of the 14,000 men comes under the purview of the sociological department at least three times a year, whether he has a bad record or has all his life lived a. decent and respectable life.

But there is no prying or spying. No inspector goes about among the man's tradespeople to find if he pays his bills or asks his neighbors if he is beating his wife.

Here is another glimpse into the working of this wonder- t'ul institution:—

A woman telephoned that she wished to speak to this department. Over the wire she told the executive to whom site was directed that the wife of one of the workmen had asked her to inform the factory that her husband, who had been employed in the works for several months, was giving indicatioth of losing his ltold. She wanted the Ford people to see if they could not help him.

That night an inspector called upon the man and found hint apparently yielding to the temptations of his former companions. Tile cheery word. the pat on the back, the encouraging smile of this inspector. all given without the slightest: suggestion of patronage. seemed to have the dc« sired effect and the man expressed a renewed determina- tion to take a stronger grip titan ever and keep straight for what there was in it for ltint aml his family.

A story is told of a. noted criminal who had been fired at. after a daring burglary and who still carried the bullet iit his body. He had found employment in the Ford factory. One day the policeman who had fired at him and who ltad taken a kindly interest in his reformation. asked Mr. Ford to accompany hint through the works. Coming upon the cx-burglar the policeman slapped ltim on the back and said in a cherry voice “Hello Bill. I want you to shake hands with Mr. Ford."

1n the din of the factory Bill did not quite distinguish the name. but he stuck out a black and grimy paw and gripped the hand of Mr. Ford with a will. Nothing was said about him or his life or his work, and the men passed on. That afternoon after quitting time Bill cattle. to the supervisor's ollicc:

‘That was the boss that shook hands with nie—the big boss that owns the works. Was it?‘

‘Sure,’ answered the supervisor. ‘W'hy not ‘."

‘\\'ell,’ said Bill. as he slonched over to a corner to llltlt: a moisture in his eyes. ‘it‘ Henry Ford will walk into his shop and shake hands with a titan like me. he can have all I‘ve got. Anybody who wouldn’t go straight for a man like that is a fool and deserves all he gets.‘

If the idea scents to run through this brief account that the Ford people are trying to make angels it is all wrong They are not. Nor are they trying to impose upon others any particular style of living. or any particular code of morals or morality. There are no hard and fast rules. and all that is expected is that a man shall behave himself as a man. Nobody knows how many total abstainers there are lit the Ford factory. for instance, nor if there are any at all. No statistics are kept. of a man‘s religion or religious or non-religious tendencies. the caption “Is More Trouble Brewing?" The Brooklyn Eagle deals somewhat gingerly with the Japan~ ese question. It expresses the. opinion that Japan has no in- tention of doing things by halves in China and quotes the Manchester Guardian. which has been furnished with a list of the demands sent from 'l‘oltio to Pekin. as saying that some of the most important of" them were omitted from the list supplied to the Powers; that the phraseology of others was so modified as to conceal rather titan to disclose their real purpose; that, the general effect of compliance by China would be to place that country under the tutelage of the Japanese, and that in effect. the Guardian alleges duplicity. citing as an especially aggravating instance Japan’s insistence that China. bind herself to cede or lease no territory or islands to any foreign Power. but saying nothing about. retaining the right to demand such lease or cession. lt. administers something of a shock to be told. says the Brooklyn Eagle. in the face of such a revelation, that "Japan stands as consistently and steadfastly as ever for the maintenonce of the principles of equal opportun- itites for all." There Is surprise as well as resentment -in both London and I’elrograd. It is easy to imagine what sort of ex- pression would be glven to both were it not for the. war. Nor is it dlfllculf. to reach the conclusion that Japan has taken the war into account. regarding the moment as psychological. Suavely anti with auction the Nippon Min- ister of Foreign Affairs protests that. all his people want is "to secure their due share of the good things of the earth." And they are filing an ultimatum to get them.

McNeill of making a. false report about the number sell- ilng strong drink In Murray River. He says the impressions made were, false and should be set right. He tells us how much he knows and about his own good qualities. As he knows the people so well he must know how many are selling strong drink and should be able to give the Rev. Mr. McNeil] some valuable information. Now 1 think Mr. temperance is very unfair with the minister to challenge him to prove there are twelve selling liquor. It would be Very unfair to ask him to prove there is one selling liquor here. There were three men taken up for selling liquor this winter and tried in Murray River and got clear of being fined in the Court. (. . . . . Com- ments on trial deleted).

I make mention of those cases to show how hard, It. is to get proof against a rumseller, and if Mr. MeNeill cannot prove there are twelve, it is no proof that it. is not so.

Now. I can count up twelve who have. the name of being in the busi- JIGSS inside of the past year. bttt to prove it is another thing. for some of them know all the tricks of the trade.

No doubt Mr. Temperance wishes to defend the people of the place and we. certainly have some fine Chris- tian people, but there are also some of the other class.

NEARLY A MILLION PRISONERS.

These include both German aml Austrians. Accord- ing to previous official estimates pub- lished here. the Tuetonic armies had lost more than 000,000 previous to January 21st. Of the 230,000 taken since January let. says the Army Messenger. 120.000 became prisoners when Przemysl fell; 110,000 were cap- tured in the Carpathians battles.
