—~When Admiral Dewey cut the Manila cable without making adequate arrange- ments for buoying, sulsequent picking up, aod working, be displayed lack of fore sight. During the bombardment of Alex~ andr.e, the cables were picked up, p'aced on board the cable steamer Chiltern and worked with as much regularity as they had been on shore.

THE OPERA.

death was unexpected, At her request, and | in the hope that a change of scene would do

her good,the family removed,a few days ago to their summer residence at Holland Cove where serious symptoms soon appeared. Her bright young Spirit passed away | yesterday afternoon.

—A letter from the Universal Peace Union of Philadelphia to the Queen of Spain was recently taken out of the United States mails and sent back to the Society. The following is a queiation from the letter:

“Tt is in our hearts to say, as the Universal Peace Union, representing many thousands of frieuds of peace in all parts of the world, and now fnom the United States, that we have aprrec ated your several concessions in this @uban trouble in behalf of peace, and we want you to hear from the people, the real represen- tatives of the American heart, that we betieve all that is desired could \be ,obtained by peaceful means. = méseage was returned to Alfred H. Love, Presidentof the Peace Union by the Poet-Office authorities at Wash- ington with a written statement that the department declined to forward the letter. A messenger was sent to Washington by Mr. Love to see the Secretary of State, who positively declined to sanction the use of the United States mails for a letter which for obvious reasons he regarded asobjectionable. Mr. Love stated that notwithstanding the prohibition of the Government, he had taken measures to see that this communi- cation was transmitted to the Queen of Spain by a roundabout way

A Bic Coxrract.—The Moncton papers report that Messrs. Paul Lea and James Reid, Dorchester, have received the con- tract for building the Merchants’ Baak of Halifax, which wil! be of stone and brick; The building wil! cost in the vicinity of $29,000, and work will be commenced in @ week or ten days.

A large and cultured audience, which in- eluded His Honor the Lieutenat Governor and Mrs. Howlan, His Lordship the Bishop of Charlottetown and many of the Clergy, gave generous and well-deserved applause; and Mrs, O'Reilly, Mies Hynd- man and Miss Karle were each presented with boquets of beautiful flower, expres ive of the appreciation of their friends.

It is pleasiog to learn that the opera will be repeated at a matinee to be given on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto, May 30.—In the crop bulletin just issued by the On‘aria Department of Agriculture correspondents in Essex county say that a great deal of tobacco is being grown this year, necessitating the hiring of extra help. A Letter'on the Subject From Hon. D. Ferguson.

Sir,—In the Daily Patriot of the 26th inst.. [ notice a letter signed “Souronian” advocating close connection between the trains ‘serving Souris, Georgetown and Tignish, and tue steamer Nortuumberland at Summerside mating it possible for passengers and mails crossing via Sum- merside to leave or reach Eastern or Western I-land points on the P. E. I. Railway on the same day.

“Souronian” does not seem to be aware that this service, a¢ far as the weet i- concerned, has been an accomplished fact ‘n the summer months since 1895. In that year, in the face of nosmall opposition, | secured the co-operation ofthe different railway euthorities and the P. E. Island Steam Nav gation Company in an arrange-~ ment by which nail and passenger con- nection beiween the United States and western Canada, on the one hand, and P. i. Island on the other, was made as close as perhaps any similar service on the Aim- erican continent. Although the opinion of the people of the western part of this Province was somewbat divided at the time, I] secured connection morning and evening between the Tignish train and the ctesmer Northumberland. Iam giad to say that the resul:s cf the ex- periment then made are such that I think few people would desire to go back to the old style of things when passengers and mails from Tignish were detained one night at Moncton and asecond at Sum< merside instead of going forward to their destioation in the evening of the same day. ‘

I beleve that aslight change might be made in the hour of departure of the West bound trains on the Mainland. So that the steamers might leave Summerside ‘neor perhaps two hours later than she does at present. That change would en- able trains leaving Tignieh, Souris and Georgetown at reasonable hours in the morning to connect with the steamer at Summerside.

I fully agree with the Patriot and its correspondent that if we are toe courage tourist travel we must have up to date time tables.
