The Irish Vice-Royalty.
The New York Tribune's London cor- respondent cables: Ditliculty in finding a successor to the Marquis of Londonderry has raised the interesting question of send- ing a Royal Prince to keep court in Dub- lin. The idea is to divide the duties, put- ting all ceremonial matters into the hands of the Prince, and giving executive powers to the Chief Secretary, who is to be elevat- ed to a principal Secretary of State. The name of the Duke of Connaught has been suggested, the Prince of Wales being of necessity compelled to be nearer the Eng-
lish capital lf the scheme should be taken up by the Government—which is more than doubtful—the thing would not
be difticult, since the Duke of Connaught could be sent to Dublin as the commander of the forces, in succession to his Bombay command. But probability points toa different issue. The matter has now been discussed for a couple of days, and at the House of Commons the main result has been to show how very little importance is attached, on either side of the House, to the maintenance of the Lord Lieutenancy. In its present formthe post has so long gone begging among the aristocracy that the idea that a scion of royalty will agree to take it is treated with incredulity. But that some departure is mneces- sary appears to be 4 point on which a ma- jority, or, at all events, a very consider- able and influential miuority, of both Con- servatives and Liberal-Unionists are at one. Some Conservatives are in favor of aban- doning the search for a qualified candidate for the post among the members of the House of Lords, and of letting the Lord- Lieutenancy pass into commission until the whole scheme of Irish Local Government has been matured by the Government. The views of another section of Minister- ialists may be found in a question which Mr. Heneage intends to ask on Monday— whether the Government will consider the expediency of introducing a bill to abolish the office of Viceroy, and transfer the ad- ministrative duties of the Lord-Lieutenant and the Chief Secretary to a Secretary of State for Ireland. This question represents the suggestion of the Times, which recalls the fact that it supported the proposal of Lord John Russell in this sense in 1850. The Times thinks that the maintenance of a separate court for Ireland favors the pro- pogation cf Particularist and Nationalist views, so that the abolition of the Lord- Lieutenancy would be a dig at Home Rule. if the Government cannot find a new Vice- roy—and Lord Brownlow, the Duke of Abercorn, and the Marquis of Ormonde have refused with others—it seems certain that the office must go into commission.

Among the heaviest locomotives ever built are those recently put on its moun- tain division by the Philadelphia and Read- ing railroad. Their actual weight in work- ing order is 153,040, and 138,340 pounds is on the drivers. They havea tractive force of 271 pounds per pound average pressure in the cylinder. Their cylinders sre 22 inches in diameter by 28 inches stroke; driving wheels, 50 inches in diameter; boiler, 6 feet in diameter and 13 feet 6 inches long over tube sheets. The tubes are 270 in number and 2} inches in dia- meter. The fire box is over 11 feet long inside by 42 inches wide, and is placed above the frames, but not above the wheels. The heating surface in the firebox is 185 square feet and the total heating surface 2,345 square feet. The engine is designed to burn anthracite.
