Srr,—Interested by some statements made in the newspapers of this city, re- ' specting the Dominion Civil Service of this 'Province, I turned my attention to the Blue B ooks, wherein I find a very unfair | discrimination against the officials of this Island.

On page 191 of the Report of the Post- master-General for the year ending 30th June, 1878, there is a statement showing that the officials in the St. John P. O. were paid salaries for that year, as follow :—

and a number of the 3rd and 4th class from 37 Tod to $480.

On page 212 I find the Postmaster and clerks in the Charlottetown Office paid as follows :—

and three others at $440 each. You will observe that the Postmaster in St. John receives $900 a year more than the P. M. in Charlottetown, and that there is a Ist and 2nd class clerk in that office, while in the Charlettetown office there is no clerk above the 3rd class. This is, certainly, very singular, because it appears to me the work must necessarily be of the same char- acter in both offices. This being true, the inevitable conclusion is, that the 4ih and 3rd class clerks in the Charlottetown office only receive $520 to $800 for the same description of work as is done by the 2nd and Jst-class clerks in the St. John office, for which they receive $940 to $1,200.

Now, Mr. Editor, there can be no reason orexcuse given for such discrimination against the officers of the Postal Depart- ment in this Province.

Among the Tombs.

Srr,—-The last of May found me in the Irish Montague burying ground. Though the day was warm, the breeze was refresh- ing, and I enjoyad it. The views of the surrounding country is very picturesque, and indicative of good and extensive culti- vation. The Church and Parish Heuse are plain, and with an air of neatness and order about them that bespeak a comfortably cir- cumstanced congregation. The same may be said of the cemetery. Iam not sure, but I think this section is under the charge of the Rev. Mr. Whelan, of Montague. Many monuments there are, and many old people rest here, awaiting the sound of the last trumpet. Vernon River was one of the central stations where the late venerable and es- teemed Bishop McEachern officiated at stated intervals, and whither the people brought their children from far and near, for tbaptism and confirmation. 1 do not know who was the first settled parish cure, but Father James Brady, who was 24 years in holy orders, had charge for a good long time. The present incumbent is ‘the Rev. Mr. Phelan—a great advocate of the tem- perance cause. Father Brady was a quiet, easy-going gentleman, and confined himself pretty, much to his parish duties. He was born in Lapinbawn, Ireland; and rests among his people, whose esteem and affec- tion for him are displayed in the handsome monument—a large cross — which they erected over his grave. The present chapel —one of the handsomest on the Island— and the parish house (which is not very or- namental) are far ahead of what Mr. Brady lived to see. The improvements bespeak the liberality and well-to-do character’ of the farmers and business-men of this fair section of the Island. And here it may be noted that in Vernon River, Irish Mon-

In this burying place ane i is an old de- faced stone which could not be read. Owen Winters has erected a beautiful marble monument to the memory of hia late wife. It is really handsome. The late Martin O'Halloran, a merchant well known in Charlottetown and Summerside, has a fine headstone and an iron railing round his grave. Patrick Stephens, of Galway, Ireland, who died suddenly on the Steam- beat W harf, Charlottetown, at the age of 56, hic requiescat in pace. Mr. R. J. Clark and his wife are tenants of the same acre, as is also Capt. A. Stephens, Galway, aged 46. Many of your readers are familiar with the names, character and business honor of Messrs. Stephens & Clark. Could Tadd to the high esteem in which they were held while living, and the good-will which accompanied them to the tomb, my per. weuld readily contribute its mite. Among their neighbors, friends and cus- tomers their memory is as green as their native Irish sod.
