The final sceue in the great national cal- amity ended yesterday at Kingston, when the body of Sir John A. Macdonald was borne to the tomb.

lt was after midnight of Wednesday when the casket arrived and was carried to the City Halil, where it was deposited be- neath the catafalque. Then commenced a steady stream of people, which continued all night and until noon yesterday.

Special trains were arriving all night bringing thousands of people.

City Hall was heavily draped inside and outside and all business was suspended, Every building along the line of march was draped.

At 2 o'clock the vast cavalcade formed into line. lt was, however, impossible to thoroughly organize the procession on ac- count of the multitude present, so that it was composed principally of societies and representatives. Deputations of Masons, Orangemen, Prentice Boys, Trne Blues, Foresters, Catholic Foresters, Oddfellows, St. Patrick’s Society, Young Irishmen, English and Scotch societies, United Work- men, police and military all walked in the same procession.

Archbishop Cleary and chaplain oceapied prominent positions, There were delega- tions present from British Columbia, the Northwest, the Grand Trunk Railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Reform Association of Brockville.

Cataraque Cemetery, where the burial took place, is three miles out of Kingston. The grave was dug eight feet deep, with a hollow square of solid masou- ry at the bottum. This receptable is eight feet long, four feet wide and three deep. Into this the casket was lowered, and covered with immense slabs of sand- stone eight inches thick, fastened with stout iron bolts, to guard against molesta- tion.

When the body was being placed in the grave 4 slight rainstorm came on, accom- panied with thunder and lightning, lasting, however, only a short time.

A guard of artillery wil watch the grave for thirty days.
