And he was compelled to admit another deficit of $1,460,027. In 1877-8 he expended the sam of $1,308,665 more than the pre- vious ‘Government's 1: rgest expenditure. He added $2,228,573 to the public debt op account of the hated Pacific Railway and inereased the teo‘al public debt by

On Monday at noon as Patrick E. Crowe, inventor of the infernal machines that were recently shipped to England, and whieh caused such a ce amo Jon threughout-the eountry, wr~ wal:ing up. Mine atreet, in Peoria Ill., he vas arrested by United Scates Marshal on an order from Mr, Me Veagh, U. 8. Attorney-General. The news quickly spreed throvglout the city. and created the greatest excitement.. A num ber of leading cit*-ens gathered, and bail in the sum of 3'0,000 was tendered, bat the Marshal simply repiied to all enquiries that he could not take bail, aud that he
must ge with him to Chicago, where he was tak n. Crowe has taken the affair very cooly... He has disposed

He says he sees in this the only possible way to tight Iraland’s wrongs. Mr. Crowe is a sober quiet citizen. but on this Subject he is quite an enthusiast. One of the infernal mrchinzes designed to blow up England jhas been taken to the Journal office-in Podia, from the bo*ler shop where they were t@ bs fitted up. ‘hey were cast.in the feugpdry of O’Rovrke Bros., and from ‘here thirteen »f thom were taken to the boiler shop of J. Moore, near by, to have a short cap of boiler iron put over the top.” The machine resembles a shell in shape. It is ten inches long and six inches thick, with a two inch thick band around it.” ‘There is an inch hele in the centre of one end. The other end is conical in + hape,éo that when stand- ing on its end it loeks like a shell. Over the hole in the leyel end is a stout cap ef boiler iron, fitted care“ully, The explosive materialis placed inside th’s shell, :he top closed with sorews a d the boiler irou e.p, and the whole left to do its work. Even if discovered,it could hardly be deferred from executing its pur- poses, for the set screws a.e so made that it is with difficulty, that they can be removed, and it would be almost certain death te tamper with it afferit was set and ready for use; as the slightest jar would rcleave the clock work and ignite the charge. It is computed that one of these machines weuld destroy a whole block of the lergest build- ings im the world, no matter how .well built. Each machine contains a pound and a holf of dynamite and an eunce and a half of fulminate of mercury.
