They met as many as four hundred settlers in one party moving toward the ‘garden country.’ They state that Mr. McDonald, ferryman at South Qu’Appelle ferried across the river at that place. in one day, 164 carts and buckboards at fifty cents each.

Oerruany Norice.—Mr. Wm. Curtis of Wiimot Valley died rather suddenly on Satur- day morning last, aged 75 years. Deceased came from Cornwall, England, nearly 40 years ago, and settled in the above locality. He was a sober, honest, hard-working man, and like most of the early settlers, began with little exeept faith in persevering henest in- dustry, and success crowned his efforts He was a good member of society, a consistent and active member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years, and died rejoicing in his Saviour.— Pioneer.

Tis season gives promise so far of being ood for fishermen, Lobsters are being caught in great plenty, indeed more than can be put up in many instances, Last week, a trap set off Kildare shore took a considerable catch of large mackerel, with those uainted with the business take as # good indication of the season's fishing. Amierican fishing vessels are already on the fishing grounds off Tignish. It is now some half a dozen years since we had anything like first-rate fishing round the Island, and it is almost time we were visited with something like the abundance of former times, — Pioneer.

Tue Braz Lixe.—The French steamer “Desirade,” of the Brazalian mail line, from Montreal, via Quebec, bound to the Brazils: arrived this morning at eight o'clock. She came here to finish loading for the Brazils. Her cargo from Montreal and Quebec com- prises chiefly spruce and pine deals, a 7 a general assortment of goods. Messrs. Jend- erson & Potts, are shipping & toa of blacking, in boxes, to Kio-de-Janeiro lhe steamer will also take one thousand barrels of fish for St. Thomas, and other cargo from this port and will sail to-night. The ‘‘ Desirade” 1s a véry fine brig-rig steamer, of large carrying capacity, and is a good sailer. She is the first of the outward line from Montreal, and will be followed by the new steamer ‘Ceara, of the same line. —Aalifaz Herald.

Ix the yacht race yesterday afternoon, the ‘‘ Carita” led all the way to the bell- buoy ; after turning the buoy, the ‘* Em- ma’ overhauled her rapidly, and had it not been for an accident to her rudder, which rendered her almost unmanageable, the race would hare been a very close one, and it is impossible te say which would have won. As it was, the ‘ Carita” cressed the line thirteen minutes ahead of the ‘‘ Emma.” We understand another match is being ar- ranged for an early date.

Tse Rev. Mr, Robertson’s meeting in St, James’ Church, last evening, was fairly well attended. In the absence of the Rev. Dr. Murray, (at thefcommencement) the Rev. K McLennan opened the proceedings with singing and reading the scriptures. Prayer was offered by the Rev, Mr, McLeod of Strathalbyn. The Chairman then intro- duced Mr. Robertson, referring to hishis- tory aud experience in the North-west, and the nature of the appointment which he holds from the General Assembly. Mr. Robertson addressed the meeting at length, and evidently awakened a large degree of interest in the object of his mission. Among th..se present were Rev. Dr. Murray, Rev. J M. McLeod, Rev. Donald McNeili, Rev. Mr. McLeod, Strathalbyn, Hon. Mr Laird, and other prominent members of the various Presbyterian gungregations of the city. Svveral contributions were volun- tarily tendered at the close of the meeting, for the Robertson Building Fund, for the North-west. These will be mentioned more particularly afterwards, together with ar- rangemente for receiving additional centri- butions in the future.
Matters in Egypt are assuming a more threatening aspect, and the general feeling in England is that military intervention will be necessary at no distant date in order to protect British interests. The safety of the Saez Canal has caused great anxiety to the Home Government, and special precautions have been taken to pro- tect the Works and officlals. Interesting to every one is the case lately referred to by the Brooklyn Bagle. It was told by Mr. W. A. Davenport, connoct d with the house of Messrs Butler, Pitwin, & Co., 476 Broadway, New York, and concern- ed the marvelous cure of Mr. Ezra D. Clark- son, near Newark, N. .., of a terrible case of rheumatism, which other remedies had failed even to alleviate. He was on his way to a hospital when Mr. Davenport met him and induced him to try St. Jacobs Oil, with the result named.
