The announcement made by the Admi- ralty that it has now “‘little hope” concern- ing the recovery of the Afelanta is almest equivalent to a declaration that there is no roem left for hope atall. The authorities appear to have dune all they could te rescue the vessel, if that had been pessible. They propose now to order ‘‘a full and searching enquiry, with the ebject of ascertainin whether the ship was by her ouild, rig ao ejuipment, including the efticers and crew, in all respects fitted fer the service on which she was empleyed.” Such an in- quiry ought certainly to be made, and it ought as certainly to lead te such new arrangements as will lessen the risk of any similar catastrophe in future. The loss of the «telanta, following the loss of the Eurudice, shows that there is something very wrong somewhere, and that we must have better and safer ways of training sea- men for the navy. retreat. Mr. William Hamitt, the sunb- sheriff, received a blow from a stone on the head, which rendered him senseless, and from the effects of which he is dangerously ill. Three bailiffs were badly hurt, and one of them is In a very precarious state.

ENORMOUS INCREASE IN EMIGRATION,

Much attention is attracted by the stead tide of emigration to America from all parts of Ireland. The population in the counties of Mayo, Rescommen, Sligo, Lei- trim, and parts of Galway, is decreasi considerably, and even in these midlan and southern distriets, where the pressure of the distress has not been so much felt, many hemes have been broken up. Frem returns made up on Wednesday at the Liv- erpeol Emigration Office it appears that during the month of April no fewer than 29,419 persons sailed from the Mersey, as compared with 12,363 in the previous menth, and 10,917 in April, 1879. These firures are the largest ever known, and in- dicate how great is the wave ef emigration to America, to which destination nearly all the emigrants have gone. The emigrants are of all nationalities, 15,850 being fer- eigners, 9,510 English, 151 Scotch, and 6 027 Irish. Emigration to America from the Clyde continues to increase. The Anchor Line steamer leaving on Thursday night had 500 steerage passengers, many of whom were foreigners, and a large pro- portion were women and children.- The great emigration has given quite an im- petus to the steamshipping trade between Glasgow and Anteriea.

The reporters of the daily press in Len- den are proverbial for their inaccuracy of ecclesiastical subjects. In perusing their reports, one may gain enough ignerance in ten minutes to last a twelvemonth. The latest is: A reperter writing up the ae- count of the conseeration of Bishep Ryle, ef Liverpool, spoke “of the ceremony as taking place on the Feast xf. Barabas. This reminds me of hearing of a learned gentleman having reported the fact that a clergyman walked into church with a vesti- bule on his back. Yet another, a few years ago the wise readers of the Tiimes were shocked at reading that in the chancel of a certain London Church, there. suspended seven Thurifers; now,a Thurifer is an ecclesiastical functionary ; and the reporter made quite a tragic affair of his account. But this, my last one, is the climax: A Seuth of England paper stated a short time ago, that the clergy of the parish were pro- gressing 80 rapidly in their views that they were actnally proctisiny celibacy in the open streets.

On Saturday, at Truro, a man named Angus Chisholm was found guilty of passing bogus ten dollar bills of the same Bank. He has not yet been sen- tenced, Richardson, a party living in Nerth Abingdon, ashort diftance out of Beston, is under arrest, charged with printing the counterfeits, an<di will have his trial shortly.
