In reply, Admiral Sampson personally dic ated a brief, terse note, stating em- phatically that December Ist would posi- tively be the date on which Spain’s rizhts,claims and sovereignty in the Iss land of Cuba would cease to exist.

Trade Returns.

‘The trade statement for September which appeared in last Saturday’s Canada Gazette, shows that the total imports for the month were $13,016,145, and duty collected $1,- 970,605, as compared with $12,057,115 imports, and duty collected $1,910,175 during the same month last year. The exports during the same month were $14,s 610,112, of which $11,901,126 was produce of Canada and $2,708,986 produce of other countries, as compared with $14,142,294 produce of Canada and $2,447,794 produce of otber countries during same month last year. This makes the total trade for the month $27,626,257 es compared with $28,647,203 for same month last year. a falling off of $1,020,951. For the quarter ending 30*h September the mports Lave been $44 190,170, and ex- ports $43,465,085, making a total of $87,- 655,255, which is apn increase of $11,199,- 699 in imports, and a decrease of $4,/41,- 839 in exports over same period last year. Tne duty collected during the quarter was $6,764 944 as compared with $5,127 700, for same quarter last year, an increase of $1,657,244.

San Juan, Oct 19.—Promptly at noon yesterday the American flag was raised over San Juan. The ceremony wae quirt and dignified, unmarred by disorder of any kind. The eleventh regular infantry, with two batteries of the fifth artillery, lauded this mocning. The latter proceeded to the fort, while the infantry lined up op the docks, It was a holiday for San Juan, and there were many people in the street».
