Lajoie était accusé d’avoir incendié la grange de Jos. Tremblay, en juin. L'enquête repose en grande vartie sur les aveux de l'ac- cusé après l'incendie, et sur des propos de vengeance qu'il avait exprimés avant ie feu, le soir même de l'incendie. Lajoie avait vendu l'hiver dernier sa terre à Trembley, mais les con- ditions du contrat ne lui plai- saient point. C2 mécontente- ment grandit dans son âme, et Lajoie manifesta publiquement qu'il entendait se venger.
Après d'incendie, Lajoie al'a à Ste. Anne de Beaupré et à sou retour, il déclara à ses voi: sins qu'il avait commis un crime, mais qu'il était prêt à réparer le tort qu’il avait cau- sé. Ses amis lui dirent de ne pas parler ainsi. 11 ne suivit pas se conseil et déclara ensuite comment ilavait mis le feu. “J'ai fait un goupillon de paille, je l'ai allumé et j'ai mis le feu.”
