Mr. H. H. Cook, a very weslihy and sbie member of the Oid Liberal party, re~ cently sent a two-psge letter (o the prees in which he denounced utterly the pro~ mise: breaking,unecrupulous and extrava- gant politicians who have in the past four years while in cflice at Ottawa disgraced Liberalism, His charges, full and purticu- lar, have not been met. Some of the gov~ ernment’s paid papers declared that Mr. Cook was a disappeinted < flicerseeker, Mr. Cook retorted that he bad buen of- fered @ Senatorship if he would pay $10, 0U0 for it. This canecd a seneation, and brought forth adevial from Sir Wilfrid

Laurier. To this denial Mr. Cook has replied ;

“One of your followers has directly, and eome of your organs Lave by inference, stated that in making these charges 1 am influenced by a failure to eecure a Sena- lorship. Replying to this statement I have eaid I was cffered a seat in the sen ateifI would pay $10,000. You have takenjit upon yourself toeeeay denial of this. Of my statement and your denial I ehall bave something to say again. In the meantime, let me pointout to you that, even if I were improper'y is flaenced in making these charges, this would not lessen their seriouscess or be any anewer to them. Your offence is not against me, but against {the decency~lev~ ing people of Canada, against every man who believes that public men should be truthful, honeet and clean.”

Mr. Cook aleoreiterates his charges in brief. He cites seventeen epec'fic inetans ces in Which the government has betrayed the principles of the Liberal party and broken faith with the people of Canada. They are:

1. Appointment of members of Par- liament to office.

2. Refusal to allow judicial enquiry into Charges of corruption, etc, agaiust a minister,

3. Increasing the public debt and ex- penditure in violation of promises.

4. Increased taxation of people by $1.16 per head.

6. Failed to send commissioners to arrange for preferential trade.
