Much h ‘ been written by me and others concerning the residences and the apparent ."we don't give a damn" attitude of the Administrat- ion towards the residents. Although that segment is accurate, it does not give ya complete picture of the prevailing indifferences. The true picture is not made up of a guilty admin- istration and a just,angel- ic resident. No,there\is the irresponsible, immature, selfish,destructive student who also says,"I don't give a damn about anyone else."

Rather than elaborate with personal opinions, here are a few questions which will.

'when answered,provide a more complete picture.

You can decide where the

liability falls:

Who willfully smashes windows on frequent occ—

asions throughout the res- idences?

Who kicks holes in the walls? Who frequently provides a

hallway carpeted with brokenfl“

beer bottles? Who breaks chairs in the

lounge areas?

Who purposely plugs and floods toilets?

Who breaks locks on doors? Those touch briefly on the residence as a building and the consideration given it.

How many of those questions- or the following ones-can be answeredzthe Administration?

Who has parties continually and into the early hours of the morning without concern for other residents who may be studying or sleeping? Who litters the public areas with garbage, papers, -cigarette butts and other refuse for any visitors to wade through?

Who shrieks like banshees at all hours when others are

'sleeping or studying?

Who decides to have floor hockey sessions in the halls during the middle of the night?

Who has phono equipment at full volume so it can be

- heard outside as well as

through the entire building? Who is it that Says "Go to- hell. I'll do as I please"?

HOW LONG CAN HE TOLERATE THIS MANAGEMENT?

I wish to make a simple point in the form of a question for your consider- ation. It will require little‘thought, but is of the utmost importance to you ’YOu are labourers who make” up the lower stratum of our society and sustain the rest. That is, it is because of you that those who are "well to do" can stay that way.

Of course, in order for you to keep them "well off",

you must remain poor. How does this effect you? well , first of all, you must work for low wages(otherwise the rich man would not be "rich") you must-do the work you

are told to do-that is, they tell you-what you should do and how you should do it,

they do this because by.keep- ‘

ing you poor and uneducated you are unable to make the decisiors which effect you and them. Also, by keeping you poor and ignorant and therefore unable to defend yourself against them,they can-then dictate to you what you are to do and how. In other words, you are not free. You are treated as though you were a child and, often, you are expected to behave like one! _ You get what they feel like ivin 'ou! 9A8 angsult of this, you

often have the feeling of not wanting to come to work because you resent n9; being treated like the man you are. But you think you must put up with this because you have a family to feed, etc. Very well, you work hard all day, doing a job you may not enjoy: what rewards do you get? well, apart from the little money you get, you can indulge some times in the only form of recreation you can have as a poor man, eating,sleep- ing, sex,getting drunk to "forget it'all". With the exception of the latter, there are all the-functions of the animal. Even a dog eats, sleeps, and has sex! Is you job, your employers, supervisors, foremen, and chiefs, keeping you at the animal level? '

You m ght think about that. You might also think about this: the only authority another man has over you, is the authority you give him!Surely you will not continue to give these men that kind of authority over you which forces you into an animalwlike exist- ence!

It has been interesting for me to note that as I was setting this article up, several residents were all

in favour of it. A typical statement came from "X" who said, "I hate living here because of the administration always trying to screw us7 but, what makes life here intolerable is the bunch of ignorant pigs around here who don't give a sweet damn about anybody except theme selves." Another interesting remark came from atproctor who said thaLhe was fed up trying to be nursemaid to a few immature children who disrupted everything for everyone else.

Who is responsible? It looks as though the responsibility falls into the lap of the administration because since it is obvious that there are those incapable of exercising self-discipline with regard for others, and since it is apparent that students can-V

not seem to bring them— selves to enforce any sort of discipline within the residences, other means must be necessary. What other "means"? I do not have the answer. Nevertheless, my experiences with other res- idences including a term in R.C.A.F. Barracks has shown me that residence life can be fun, free and pleasant. Here it is not fun for all, it is not free for many and it is thoroughly unpleasant for most because of the blatant disregard by the few for the many.

Those in administration tell us: "You don't even have to come to UPEI." I agree! Both are true statements but, according to the rules of the Univ? ersity, you still have to pay a full years residence fee even if you move out the day after you move in.

During my investigations into these things, I have discovered that most of the residents are in a similar situation; i.e., they were unable to locate off—cam- pus housing.As it is noted, the residences are not filled to capacity. Why?

Why is it not possible to provide an accurate induce— ment of fun, free and pleasm ant residential life? If the Administration would forget for five minutes their ever- lasting search for another dollar, they would find that they wouldn't have to!

Selective admissions to Res- idence is one alternative to the present "if you have the money, you've got yourself a room" attitude.
