SUGAR _ BOUNTY, THE JUDGES’

The Tariff, ” Chinese Imuni- gration, &¢. Orrawa, July 8

Hon. Mr. Foster yesterday moved the House into committee ugon the resolution to provide for an extension of bounty of $1 per 100 pounds, 70 degrees, upon raw beet root sugar grown in Canada fur two years more, from Ju'y Ist, 1893, to June 30th, 1895. There was a discussion on the reso- lution throughout the morning and after- noon sessions, when the resolution was reported. Sir John Thompson announced that the resolutions respecting the salaries of judges would be dropped and taken up again early next next session. The tariff bill was introduced and read a firat time. Hon. Mr. Foster intrwluced a resolution aliowing members to draw their indemnity for twelve days’ absence during the session provided such absence was caused by public business or illness

The Chinese emigration bill was read for the third time.

The second session of the seventh par- liament of Canada is now practicaily at an end, although the House will meet again at three o'clock, aud prorogation will posi- tively take place before Saturday evening. All business is really over, and the Com- moners are only waiting for the Senate to get through with the crim criminal code.

THE ENGLISH ELECTIONS,

Conservatives, 160; Liberals, 127.

The corrected election totals at midnight show the Conservative strength to be 160 in all; Liberals, 116; Irish and Parnellite Navionalists, 10; Parnellites, 1. The Irish Home Rule strength, therefore, counting the labor cancidates and Irish Nationalists, anti-Parnellites and Parnellites, which are Liberals, is 127, against a Tory and Liberal Unionist strength of 160. It is generally admitted that Gladstone will bo returned to power and sustiined in his place by the Irish vote. There is great jubilation among radicals and socialists at the victory in Batterrea won by Burns, the labor a:i- tator, over the Consery«tive candidate. Thomas Sexton, Nationalist, has been ousted from Belfast by a son of the Right Hon. W. E. Forster, at one time Chif Secretary for Ireland, when he was known ty the title of **Buckshot.”

Camp Brighton.

At ten o'clock pesterdsy morning the 82nd Battalion was formed up and in- spected by companies by Major Gordon, acting D. A. G., commencing with No. 1, in company driil and efficiency of cflicers, all of which was very satisfactorily per- formed. No. 3 Company of Charlottetown commanded by Capt. D. Stewart, was the best drilled company of the Battalion, making full marks in everything.

Major Gordon said he was delighted with the camp throughout.

In the afternoon the Battalion was in- spected by Major Gordon. The battalion drawn "p in line received the inspecting officer at the general salute, after which he made an inspection of the arms and ac- coutremen's of the men. The meu were then put through some manceuvres, such as breaking into column, forming into line,

the firing exercises, etc. Considering the short time allowed for prepar- ation the different manceuvres were

very creditably performed, showing that the men took an interest in their drill and were anxious to excel. At the close of the inspection Lt.-Col. Gurdon made some re- marks to the men, and expressel himself as being weil pleased with the soldie:ly ap- pearance they presented, as well as the manner in which they performed their drill.

The day's proceedings terminated with o rand promenade concert and strawherry festival There was a large attendance of visitors, and altogether it was a grand success. Several solos and choruses were sung by the men, and the bayonet exercise and sword dance were performed. The strawberry and cream table was well patronized and every- thing passed off weil.

The Artillery will be inspected by Major Wilson, of ‘‘B” Battery, Quebec, to-day.

Last night a lad named Scott fell from the magazine, having his arm fractured. Dr. D. Johnson, assistant camp surgeon, set the broken limb and the lad is doing well.

Camp will be struck to-morrow (Yaturday.)
