Face Off

The Mount Allison Mounties rolled into the Civic Center to take on the Panthers on January 26.

In the first period, the Panthers got on the board first with a goal by Tyler Ertel, assisted by White and Sproul, at 4:30. The second goal in the game was by the Panthers, KJ White scored at 11:41, assisted by Sproul and Nelson. Before the end of the first, the Panthers put a third goal on the board at 18:18, by Forbie MacPherson.

The second period saw the Mounties attempt to come back. In the opening ten minutes, the Mounties put two goals on the board -- one by Clark at 0:51, and the second by Luke Nelson at 9:36. However, the assault was quickly ended. Tyler Ertel scored his second goal of the game at 10:40, assisted by Nelson and White. Barely a minute later, capitalizing on a misplay

by the Mounties’ goalie, Cory Power fed Mike Harding, who slipped the puck into the open net at 11:39. Two minutes later, Clarke Trolley scored, assisted by James and Pomeroy. The same trio teamed up to score a second

goal less than a minute later at 14:02, this time Pomeroy took the feed from James and Trolley. The end of the second saw the score at 7-2 for the Panthers.

There was less scoring in the third, however, the Panthers did add two more goals, both by MacPherson. The first was at 2:14, assisted by Skilliter, and the second at 13:27 assisted by Lavoie. The final score was 9-2 for the Panthers. With his hat trick, MacPherson was named player of the game.

The Panthers were also victorious at UDM on Sat. The winning goal of the 4-3 contest was scored by MacPherson with nine seconds left.

The Panthers next action is against UNB on Feb 3 and 4.

A special note -- during the game the Panthers All-Star representatives were recognized. The Panthers attend- ing the All-Star game in Halifax, on Feb 2, are KJ White (as Captain of the McAdam division), John Nelson, Daryl Lavoie and Dave Lemay. Congratula- tions guys.

On January 27, both UPEI basketball teams were in action against the visiting St Mary’s Huskies.

The ladies took to the court first.

Both teams were evenly matched and the first half saw them exchanging points and leads. The Panthers re- ceived some great outside shooting by Sirois and Deighan. At the half the Panthers led 37-36.

_ The second half saw the Pan- thers begin to establish a lead, thanks to offense from Johnston and Rigby. The ladies led by as much as ten points, but the Huskies refused to quit and slowly ate away at the lead. The Panthers were unable to hold off the Huskies and lost 81-78. The player of the game was SMU’s Jadranka Crnogorac. Leading scorers for the Panthers were Johnston (16), and Shive and Rigby (14 each).

Next the men took to the floor. The first half saw both teams get off to a slow start. The half remained close thanks to scoring by Newson and Robinson. At the half the Panthers led 35-30. The second half saw the Panthers slowly start to pull away from the Huskies. The Huskies were unsuccessful in coming from behind, and the Panthers won 74-64. Player of the game was Doug Newson who had 25 points in the win. Also scoring for the Panthers was Robinson (17) and MacDonald (9).

The next day the Acadia teams were in to take on the Panthers. In the first game the ladies were eager to win

after the previous loss. In the first half the ladies got off to a good start, thanks to scoring by Rigby and free throws by Saunders. At half the Panthers were up 48-38.

The second half saw the Pan- thers start to lose their lead as the Axettes came on strong. The Panthers hung in and battled the Axettes until the end. The Panthers defeated the Axettes 87-77. Player of the game was Stephanie Shive, who had 14 points and had a strong all-around game. Also scoring for the Panthers was Rigby (18), Saunders and Johnston (12 each).

The men then found themselves tipping off against the Axemen. The first half was evenly matched with both teams fighting for the lead. The Panthers offense was led by Robinson on the inside. By half, the Panthers held a very narrow lead at 45-44.

The second half continued to be a battle for the lead. Both teams were evenly matched and exchanged bas- kets through much of the time. In the closing minutes the Panthers began to pull away. The Axemen tried, but could not close the gap, and the Panthers won 75-70. This win puts the Panthers in a three way tie for first in their division. The player of the game went to Peter Lawlor, who along with his 15 points had a strong game on the boards for the Panthers. Also scoring for the Panthers were Robinson (24), Newson (13) and Lucas (11).
