The bible reading given yesterday after- noon in St. Paul's Church by Bishop Court~ ney wae largely attended, and the manner of his Lordship teaching the Word of God was exceedingly original and helpful. The Bishop seems (to fairly bubble over with bible knowledge, sometimes repeating long elections of it by heart, to prove . point,

In the evening, inspite of very wet weather the church was fairly well filled. The subject of the sermon was Paul before Fel x, and the discourse was most touching and eloquent. It wasasermon of such power that we alicm hear or feel. If Paul spoke to Felix as did the Bishop last ea no wonder the heathen judge trem. led.

The afternoon meeting was devoted to a meditation on repentance and was partici - pated io by a large number.

_ The Bishop holds another bible reading in St. Paul’s today at 4p. m., and the usual service at 7 30 p. m.

Wuere Merit Tetts.—There seems a likelihood of some interesting develop= ments inthe British educational eystem. there has long been a cry for a continuous ladder from the board school to the univer sities. Apparently it bas now been reared and there are many feet on the rungs. Out of seven natural science scholarsbips awarded by Oxford in the last month, Three have been won by boys from the People’s Palace Day School. These schools are filled with pupils from the public elementary schools, whose parents are of the artisan claes. The Oxford scholarsbips of the value oj $400 yearly, for four years, are open tothe whole Kingdom. Of these three boys, one goes to Christ Church, the most ar.stocratic college of Oxford; another to Magadalen, which is very select, pro- verbially demanding either brains, blood, or billion.

Recent Suipments.—The Summereide Farmer says: On Moaday morning Mr Kane, of Summerside, shipped 200 lambs by the Northumberland to St John, and MrC A McNeill, of Kensington, shipped 200 on Tuesday morning to Boston. Mr Kane has, counting recent shipments only, shipped about 2,500 head of this season’s lamb crop and &0 pigs. In the same period Mr David Keefe has sent away 3000 sheep and lambs and about 150 head of cattle. These are only two of the local buy- era, butthey have left a matter of about $14,000 with the farmers.

More Sreep.—Chief Large’s purchase of Melrose adds another to the fast ones of this city. Melrose is a fast pacer, 5 years old, and a full sister of Montrose, 2.203. Her dam is Presto, by Enfield Jr, and she is sired by Almont Wilkes, owned by Mr J M Nicholson, Grafton Street. While west last week Mr Large eavs he saw a five year old stallion sired by Almont Wilkes that is hard to beat in the Province both for speed and siyle, and also several others sired by the seme horse, which could not be bought. Alment Wilkes is by the old standard bred stallion Hernando, 2891, and Mr. Nicholson bas had him registered, so that his patruns can breed standard bred

Tur Storm.—Sunday’s storm is reported te have been very bad in the weetern part of the Jeland. The wind blew furiously and was accompanied by snow aud hail, and the highest tide on record, Private advices inform us that the Kildare Bridge, known as Father Burke’s Bridge, is com pletely washed ont. This bridge, it is said, should have ken bul: four feet higher than it was, but the inco~petency of the Public Works Depariment .eaves it a bill of expense and unfit for travel. A schooner which was being loaded for the West Indies for MrC B Rogers, west asbore in Cascumpec harbor having parted her cable. The telephone wires were all down as a result of the gale.
