A youth of eighteen was yesterday joined in solemn wedlock to a maiden of forty summers at the Manse House on Prince street. They afterwards promenaded the most public streets, and left in the evening train for Summerside to which place they belong.

Linessxy.—A boy named John Hockins wxs this morning arraigned before the Sti- pendiary Magistrate for stealing a cow-hide from Wm. Thorn. The plaintif says that in séarching for the hide, he went into God- kin, the tanner’s, where he found Hockins sellite the hide. Convicted, and imprisoned for one month with hard labor.

DPexp Bopy or a Boy Founp.--The boy McAdam, who has been sometime missing from the North River, was yesterday found dead on the Road near the farm of John McKinnon. A few days before Christmas he left a house to go to hishome. It was after dark and a heavy show storm was ragifig in which the boy 13 supposed to have beem lost.

Disrzassep Coat Miners.—The great industry of coal mining is not in a very flourishing condition in Wales just now. There is positive misery in abundance throughout the whole Welsh coal districts, and @ correspondent of the London Times states that *‘for the last two years, the collier has been getting gradually poorer. His whole earnings, when at work full time, he required for supplying himself and his family with food, and the clothes that ought to have been renewed have been gradually falling away into rags. The children’s shoes are worn out and cannot be replaced with new ones, and thus he and his family are not only being pinched with hunger, but are also suffering from the cold.”

on Wa. Srertinc Maxwat.-—Sir Wm. Sterling Maxwell, the veteran author and meiaber of Parliament, died at Venice on thealdSth, Hewas born at Kenmure, near GlaSgow, 1813, and assumed the name of Maxwell on the death of his maternal uncl>, Sir John Maxwell, in 1865, when he suc- eocded to the barony. Sir William was member for Perthshire from 1852 till 1865 and was re-elected. He was successively elected Rector of St. Andrew’s University in 1863, Lord Rector of the University of Edinburgh in 1872, and Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1875. His best known works are “Annals of the Artists of Spain,’ ‘‘Cloister Life of Charles V.,” and ‘Velasquez and his Works.” About a year avo Sir William married the Hon. Mrs. Norton, the grand-daughter of Sheridan.

In Montreal on Monday last a man named Thompson, while drunk, quarrelled with his mother-in-law, and her daughter iaterfering he struck the latter a blow with an axe handle, almost killing her: he was arrested.

James Comfort and his niece Miss Tripp, of towaship of Grimsby, went recently to see some friends above Hamilton, and on their way home stopped over night in an open shed. It being very cold, Comfort’s feet were so badly fcozen that the sin of the soles came off with his boots, andthe girl had her feet so bally frozen that they had tobe amputated above the ankles.

Queen Victoria’s speech caused considerable dis ippointment at Constantinople.

‘ Supreme Court. Jan’y 24, 1878. _ In the dispute which arose between the | Counsel as to who had the right to peremp- tory challenge, the Judge ruled that, as | both sides exercised the same right to chal- | lenge for cause and to ‘* stand aside,” they {had now the same right of peremptory chal-

The Omemee murderer has been lodged in the jail at Lindsay, to await his trial at the Spring Assizes. The Governor's message to the Utah Legis- lature recommends legislative suppression of polygamy.
