There were on January 1 of this year $774,000.000 worth of deposits jin the banks of the Australian syatem, over $200 009,000 fof which was from British depositors, Sinee then $230,. 000,000 have been substracted by failures, aud how much more by the drain siill going on it is Impossible even to estimate. How much better it would have been if some at least of this bountiful contribution of the Australian aud British public to a “period of boom,” had been placed in stable and substantial investments such as Canada offers in endless variety.
Cuban Revolution Begun. GENERAL UPRISING REPORTED ALL OVER THE ISLAND.
Cuba is again ia the throes of a revolu- tion. A general uprising has taken place throughout the eastern portion of that
island,
The movement, which hes been kept from the public by the authorities, was started near Holguin on the 24th April, when two brothers named Sartorns raised the war ery, and, with twenty followers, marched out of # little town named Purvio, being reinforced on the following day by eighty men from the town of Velasco. Reports of uprisings throughout the dis- tricts of Manzaniilos, Holquin, CGuanta- namo, and Tanos, are being received.
The Captain General called a council of war on the night of April 27, and shortly after issued an order declaring the province of Santiago de Cubs in « state of siege, and orders have since been issued ditachisg troops at every available point, which are being sent eastward to check the up rising now becoming general, appirently in keeping with the previous arrangements of leaders throughout Havana, Matanzas, and the neighboring cities.
Regular troops are marching through the streets and drilling constantly at Havana. The militia is being pressed into service, and extra guards are placed on all public buildings.
The steamer Villaverde has been des- patched with a battalion cf the Zarageza regiment for Nuevitas.
A compary of guerrillas who have been following bandits in the vicinity of Havana, has been ordered to Marzinillo, and the cutter Magellanes will gall from Santiago de Cuba for Gilbara, on the north co et, where she will remain to intercept the landing of filibuatering expeditions.
The siruation is considered serious by ihe authovities, and the press and al} the avail- able force of the zovernment is being con- centrated in the Vuelta Ariba district.

This is no doubt true, but when a doctor takes ill he genera)ly calls in one of his own profes- sien, in whose skill he has every confidence, or when a druggist is in a similar situation, he often puts his faith in the preparations of some other chemist which he knows give good results. Both the doctors and drug- gists in such cases show their good sense. A casein point happened in this town a shorttime ago. Mr. F. M. Turner, the well known and popular druggist, who is now travelling for Parke, Davies & Co., has foralong time been asuffsrer from congestion and inflummation of the kidneys He tried a great many remedies, but with. out results, His patrons, however, spoke se highly of Dodd's Kidney Pills that he was induced to try them He now states that he is cumpletely cured, and to your correspondent he eaid that as a rule he had very liitle faith in pstept medicines, but that for the cure of kidney troubles, rheumatism, backache, ete., he dves not know of any remecy that is giving such goo i resulta as Dodd’s Kidney Piils.

‘*My case is perhaps unlike any other that has been brought to yoar no‘ice; it is a marvellous one. Jam 70 years of age, and for the pas: 15 yeirs have been breaking down from neura! sia in its worst forme, and rheumatism in my hips aud back. For the past five years I have been too feeble and weak to pursue any calling.
In that low state of health I was stricken down in January last with ‘la grippe,”’ which was then epidemic in this place, and from which quite a number died.
