Three Misses.

The old restaurant near IJ. G, Baker’s old store, owned by J. Ellis, has been the scene of innumerable dances —stag and breed, since Col. Macleod, first p!anted the flug-staff at the confluence of the Elbow and the Bow. In ancient days—that is, two or three years ago, when the first white woman that ever struck Cypress was a celebrity,and before the railway spread its degenerating influeme ‘hrough the land, our ancestors—<uch as Jack Ellis, Joe Butlin, Bob Ogburn and others— reeled off many a giddy night to the music of “‘Allez mon gauche” and “Dos et Dos.”

The old-time glory has fled—the Calgary brass band killed it—but there are still occasions oo which the fiddle and the call of the star dancer may be heard intermiogled with the rush of the Elbow and the sighing of those who could not get a partner.

Sach a night was last night, when One of the old-time half-breed dances took place at the above mentioned academy. As usual the half-breed fair sex were in a large minority, and whea the Black Kid, instead of taking his share ofthe dances—say everv third dance—stood up for ten consecutive sets, to the manifest exclusion of ten other—and perhaps better men—Mr. Hank F srbes, late detective in the em- prey of the S. W. Stock Association at

acleod, felt it to be an outrage, and said so.

It is well understood all over the world, at dances, that when one gentle- man insults another, by saying that other ‘‘ain’t no good anyhow,”—the in- sult has to be wiped outin blood. The Biack Kid proceeded to wipe il out in the customary style, and with such fair average success, that Mr. Forbes felt it incumbent to return to town over the midoight plainto fetch his shooting iron and proceed in a more scientific manner.

This is how at exactly .5 minutes after one this morning, a small but en- thusiastic poker party at Atlanta Ave. near—--was startied by a double report. The reports followed each other in quick succession and may be explained by saying that on Mr. Porbes,reappear- ance at the soiree with his little gun,the Black Kid, who has smelt powder be- fore at Loon Lake and other celebrated fields, jamped for the gentle men’s legs in an effort to upset him. The trigger was pulled three times, first time, no report followed ; second time, the bullet weot through the Kid’s hat into the floor ; third time, grazed his arm and ribes and entered the floor, when the Kid bolted for fields and pastures new.

This is how the dance broke up last night. The Biack Kid, alias John Ber- trand, he ia well «nd hearty. As for Mr. Forbes, he must be having « par- ticularly cold ride for the boundary line, with the winds at fourteen miles an hour behind him, and the thermome- ter fast approaching the zero point.
