Tur market was weil attended to-day. Beef and pork were largely in excess of demand. Prices are as follows :--Beef, small, from 5 to 12 cts.; do quarter from 3 to 7 cts; mutton, from 4 to 8 cts.; lamb, from 4 to 8 cts.; geese, each, from 30 to 50 cts; ducks, from 25 to 30 cts.; chickens, per pair, from 25 to 45 cts.; butter, fresh, from 20 to 23 cts.; do tub, from 12 to 18 cts.; potatces, from 45 to 50 cents; hay, from 45 to 50 cts.; oats, : from 28 to 30 cents; flour, per 100, from $2.85 to $83; oatmeal, per 100, from $2.50 to $3. pork, from 3} to 4 cts.

Dr. Carer died in the Jail of this City this morning, where he has been incar- cerated for the last fifteen years. The par- ticulars of his incarceration, as far as we ean learn, are : His wife, for some reasons, made application for a divorce. The case was tried and a judgment granted for sep- arate maintenance, which amounted to fifty pounds sterling—half his yearly income. This he refused to pay, and he was in con- sequence imprisuned. His remains will be

‘Tne mails for the present week have been very irregular. Those via Shediac were re- ceived Tuesday and Wednesday at noon respectively,instead of the evening previous. On Thursday evening at 10.15 the mail for that day was received, being one and a half hours overdue. The boat hugged the wharf at Summerside all day yesterday, and did not leave for Shediac until 9 o'clock this morning, and may be expected to return with a double mail this evening. Joun Garrney, Esq., has received a let- ter from A. L. Murdoch, Esq., Manager of the Farmer’s Club Fair, of Massachusetts, stating that the samples of P. E. Island grain forwarded him have been awarded a diploma, at the above Fair. Mr. Murdoch

*is forwarding to Mr. Gaffney some samples of early potatoes, corn and hay seed, which were highly recommended by the judges at the Fair. It is stated that the potatoes will harvest in the garden in forty or fifty days, and in the field in thirty days earlier than the Early Rose or any other variety. ‘They are called the ‘‘Massachusetts Perfec- tion.” Mr. Murdoch writes that the Hay

. Seed, called the ‘‘Red Tod,” is from the Marzefield Marshes, and from better hay than can be found in the State, as it will keep horses as well without grain as they are now kept with English hay or timothy with grain. —Summerside Journal.

Owrne to the great demand for potatoes and the reasonable prices paid for this com- modity, the complaint against low markets has almost died out,and the farmers and mer- chants have been able to meet one another more cheerfully than was anticipated in the early part of the season. Still, the exceed- ingly low price of grain is causing the far- mers to grumble, now that the roots are nearly ali sold off. The price of oats is lower than has been experienced for many years, and there is scarcely any demand for what has hitherto been the chief article of expvat in this Province. We understand that very large quantities remain unsold to- wards Launching, Grand River, and numer- ous sections of the country. Very few ves- sels are engaged in the trade this fall,which is sometning we are not accustomed to on this Island —-K. C. Advertiser.

Ar the meeting of the Summerside Tem- perance Reform Club, held on Monday, the 4th inst., the following officers were elected for the current term : President, R. McC. Stavert: Ist Vice, Miss Ackerman; 2nd Vice, John McKenzie ; 3rd Vice, Mrs. R. TY. Holman; 4th Vice, Edward Dooling; 5th Vice, Mrs. Ruggles ; Recording Secretary, David Schurman; Financial Secretary, Mrs. J. D. Reid; Treasurer, Daniel Stew- art. The Club celebrated its first anniver- sary on Wednesday night. Stirring ad- dresses were delivered by the Revds. P, Doyle, Neil MeKay, R. B. McDonald and J. F. Betts, Angus McMillan, Esq., and Mr. Bartlett. This gentleman’s speech was more especially directed to the young men. Chornses by the choir and music by the Band enlivened the proceedings of the evening. At the close a large number signed the pledge, and the club starts on its second year under circumstances which hold forth egcouraging prospects of con- tinued success.

Tue Postmaster at Maniegne has been charged with tampering with papers passing through the office at that place. Alley vs. Duchemin.

S1r,—In your evening issue of the 13th inst. you publish the ‘“‘important decision” in the case of Alley vs. Duchemin Bros. You give the plaintiff's affidavit for obtaining the injunc- tion and the evidence of several of the neigh- bors, confirming the plaintiff's statements ; but you did not give the affidavits or the de- fendants’ evidence for dissolving the injunc- tion. Why not publish both sides of the case, so that the public may know the whole facts of this ‘‘important decision”? I fear there is some mistake about the statements of the pressure, the steam boiler, vibrations, buzzing, distant thunder, etc., etc. Yours, &c.,

An Ottawa despatch says: ‘‘ Mr. Teale, of Utica, N. Y., will start a woollen factory, employing at least 100 operatives. The city gives him 99 years’ lease and exemption from taxes for ten years, and a bonus of one thousand dollars, the city holding a lieu on the property.”

Ox Tuesday last, while Mr. Donald J. Gillis, of Miscouche, was on his way home from Summerside, he ruptured a blood ves- ; sel, which resulted in instant death. This sad accident took place near the residence ot Charles Green, Esq., Dr. Gillis was sent for, but before he arrived life was extinct. Mr. Gillis was an old and deservedly res- pected resident of Miscouche, and his sud- den death will be very much regretted in that locality— Journal.
