Tae Yarmouth ship Vendome was destroy- ed by fire in the North Sea while on the pas- sage from New York to Amsterdam with a cargo of oil. The date of the loss is not given. The captain has landed at Rotterdam and it is supposed the crew were saved also. The Vendome Was owned by Wm. D. Lovitt, of Yarmouth. She was 1750 tons and was in- sured with freight for $22,000 in the Boston Marine.

Tue Port Hawkesbury correspondent of the Halifax Chronicle writes: ‘*‘The Collector of Customs here has been ordered to return $200 each to the schooners Scylla, of Lunenburg, and W. D. Daizley, of Gloucester, which were seized last summer and fined $400 each for violation of the customs law. The former sold some barrels to the Gloucester schooner Moro Castle. and the other landed a man and two barrels of flour without reporting.”

Mass., a few days ago, decision was given, in the case of Rosanna Costello, vs. James Mc- Evoy. This was a suit for $2,000 brought by the plaintiff under the civil damage act. The plaintiff alleged that by reason of the defend- amt selling liquor to her mother the latter became dissolute and drunken, and that there- by the plaintiff was deprived of the care which she would otherwise have received in her childhood, and that, further, she received from her mother while the latter was intoxi- cated, personal injuries by being beaten and flogged. Tur Sammerside Journal says itis report- ed that several small robberies have occurred at Malpeque and Hamilton lately. Ono Thurs- day night last Mr. Thos. Donald lost a barrel of pork and some hains, Mr. Benjamin Wood- side a quantity of wheat, and Mr. Arthur Owen a set of silver mounted harness. The premises of other parties were visited the same night, and some articles carried away. It is also reported that about seven tons of hay have been stolen from Mr. P. McNutt’s barn on the Breen farm.

Tne death recently occurred near St. John’s, Nfld., of Mrs. Marianne Andrews, widow of George Andrews, a Newfoundland sea cap- tain widely known in his time, and grand- daughter of the Irish liberator, Daniel O’Con- nell. She was a danghter of Daniel O'Con- nell, merchant, of Cork, whose father was the famous Irishman. She resided in Boston for four or five years; but since the death of her husband, which occurred some time ago, she had lived in Newfoundland. She was 64 years of age.

A sap accident happened yesterday after- noon by which a fine lad named Thomas Bol- ger, aged 15 years, lost his life. It seems that in company with a number of other lads he walked out on the ice as far as Fort Am- herst lighthouse, just off from which the sea was breaking over the rocks. Here they amused themselves by waiting till the sea ran off, then leaping on the rocks and jumped off again before it returned. While young Bol-

er was doing this the sea threw in a piece of ice which striking him in the back knocked him into the water and his bedy was imme- diately draffged beneath the ice by the under- tow and has not since been recovered.—St. John's Mercury.

Fears are entertained that the well-known sealing steamer Hagle, 343 tons, has been lost. She was owned by Browning Bros., and commanded by Capt. Jackman, one of our most experienced and successful sealing masters, and has a crew of 240 men, all of whom are said to be lost. There are ugly rumors prevailing as to the condition of the steamer when she left port to prosecute the voyage, and it is said that her boilers were unsafe.

The reports so far received indicate that the seal fishery this year will be a failure. These reports have caused a very gloomy

The McCormick-Dowd Race.

match between McCormick and Dowd grew | each night in intensity, was amply demon-! strated by the fact that over 1800 people | assembled in the Victoria Rink last even- ing, to witness the final contest. As they entered on the fifteenth and last mile, with the advantage only slightly, if any, in favor of McCormick, the spectators were too ex- cited to cheer. Suddenly, however, when only about one-eighth of the lap had been completed Dowd was seen to sheer in toward the centre of the rink, McCormack keeping right on until he was fouled by a man running across the ice. McCormack was tripped and fell but soon

regained his feet and skated on. Dowd’s stop was only momentary, but the contest

was a hopeless one for him, then McCor- mack being a lap ahead. Time forthe 15 miles, 59 minutes 35 seconds. When ques- tioned as to why he had stopped, Dowd said that when he was passing the judges stand a gentleman with a white coat waved a cane at him and told him he had finish- ed. This is denied by others.

Another Mystericus Box.

A brief sensation was caused to-day by a report that yesterday evening an attempt on the life of Right Hon. A. J. Balfour was discovered and frustrated. In the mail there was a small box, addressed to Mr, Balfour, which the clerk obtained per- mission to have opened, as it looked suspi- cious. It was found to contain a small phial, connected with springs, attached to a@ powder inside. A careful investigation has. however, shown that the whole thing was a hoax, and the small bottle was filled with what was probably pulverized coffee.

Edward Madden, night watchman at Whale River Station, C. P. R., accompan- ied a McDougall, store keeper,to an: Indian camp last night for the purpsse of collecting furs. McDougall got intoa dispute with the Indians and Madden went to his assist- ance, when he was shot through the head and instantly killed by a squaw.
