Proressorn ScuuRMAN, of “Acadia College, lectured in Halifax on the 3rd inst., op ‘‘John Milton.” The Herald reports that the audience was the largest and most brilliant that has assembled in the hall during the course. During the hour and a half that the lecture occupied in delivery the audience sat in the most wrapt attention, the only break in the otherwise perfect silence being the applause which was again and again called forth by the niagnificent periods which came so eloquently from the lecturer’s lips. The studeuts of Dalhousie are to be congratulated on their good fortune in being able to close their excellent course with such a splendid discourse as that’ presented to the delighted audience Friday night.

The Bank of P, EH. Island.

Tue adjourned meeting of Shareholders and Directors of the Bank of P. E. Island was held to-day. A letter was read from Louis H. Davies, Esq., which showed that the settlement of the Bank's affairs in England had not made the progress anticipated. A desultory discussion followed on the ques- tion of liquidation or resumption, The greater number of stock-holders present favored the latter, and we are informed that somefof those present not only agreed to pay the calls upon the shares, but promised handsome denations. The meet- ing then adjourned until Thursday, the 20th inst.

Land League Meeting.

A regular mecting of the Fanny Parnell Branch of the Irish National Land League was held st Lake Verd Schoolhouse, on Thursday, the 23rd ult. The meeting was well attended, there being over one hundred resent, including several members of other

ranches. The Presideut opened the meeting with a weil.delivered recitation, and, after a few remarks, called upon Mr. Curran, who ave a short review of the political careers of

arnell and Davitt. He said if we persevere in this great movement, it will be the means of hurling the landlord vipers from Ireland across the Eastern, as the reptiles were hurled into the Western, Ocean.

Mr. P, Mooney then gave a very spirited and patriotic acdress. He was followed by Messrs. D. O'Keetie and E, Kelly, each of whom related some episodes in- the tenant life in Ireland.

Mr. RK. Campbell then took the floor, which he occupied for an hour. He gave «a glowing account of Grattan’s Parliament, the great improvement of the country at that time, and showed the necessity of uvion in this movement if we want to see self-government in Ireland,

The President was then relieved of the chair, and Mr, Edward Kelly put in his place. After a few appropriate and well-selected re- marks by the President, he proposed the fol- lowing resolution, which was carried with enthusiasm.

Resolved, That the sincere thanks of the Fanny Parnell Branch of the Irish National Land League be awarded to Hon. G. W. Howlan, for his. patriotic and praiseworthy action, in furnishing the Hon. Justine Mc- Carthy, Leader of the Irish party in the British House of Commons, with the history and explanatory papers of the late land agi- tation and final expulsion of landlordism from P.E L., thereby arming him to meet Mr, G@adstone on equal terms. Be it further

Resolved, That we fully endorse the reso- lutions adopted by the different Societies of Charlottetown on St, Patrick’s day, in refer- ence to a reselution to be proposed in the Dominion House of Commors.

As midnight was apprvaching, a moticu of adjournment was carried.

The vote on the Oniavio Boundary Ques- | tion was reached yesterday morning at four o'clock. The Opposition were de- feated by an overwhelming majority. Six Grit members voted with the Government. Mr. Blake was silent and disheartened. In this latest movement to raise bad feeling against the Government, the Leader of the Opposition has been completely out- generalled, and his followers in conse- quence are sorely depressed. One of them has admitted that the more activity they display, the surer their defeat and dis- appointment.

Yesterday afternoon was occupied in dis- cussing the sugar question. Messrs. Pat- terson of Brant, and Thomas White of Cardwell, made excellent and convincing speeches on the motion. They were fol- lowed by Sir Richard Cartwright in a loud and abusive speech. The motion was lost.

The House then went into Committee of Supply, Mr. Kirkpatrick in the chair. Several items were passed; after which the House adjourned for Easter Holidays until Tuesday next.

A telegram received on Wednesday from Constantinople reports that the people in Cesarea are dying from famine and needing help. In Asia Minor locusts have de- voured the grain and grass in vineyards and gardens, leaving a desert behind. Three successive crops have been devas- tated by this plague, and the prospect of great distress and famine is imminent.

Wasurtneoton, April 5. _The Senate, to-day, by a vote of twenty- nine to twenty-one, refuses to pass the Chinese Bill over the President’s veto.

Rome, April 5. It is stated that the Ministry propose to consider a scheme for a submarine tunnel between Reggio and Messina, It is esti- mated that the cost will be 64,000,000 \ire.

The Bersogliere and Italie affirm that Cardinal Jecaboni, Papal Secretary of State tendered his resignation to-day, but the Pope required him to defer it until after Easter.

GRaNnD Wats, April 5. A fhightful accident occurred here this evening, by which John F. Leslie, lost his life. He was braking on the train, and the brake broke throwing him on the track, two cars passiny over him, severing the head from his body and otherwise terribly mangling him.

The Pacific coast newspapers are bitter in denunciation of President Arthur for his veto of the Chinese bill, and they predict that it will throw several States into the hands of the Democrats.

Papers generally commend the veto as sound, prudent, and patriotic, but admit that it will lead to a temporary defeat of the Republican party on the Pacific slope.
