We are apparently in the midst of an epidemic of embezzlement, says the 5°. Louis Post-Despatch. Defaulters, for- gers, and swindlers of all kind abound, and dishonesty among trusted employees is beginning to shake our confidence in human nature.

There is a partical remedy, which “is worth trying. This is to employ women as clerks, and to let women handle the cash.

Young women have not the tempta- tions of young men. They do not smoke and drink and haunt billard- rooms. They do not spend money on hack-riding and on frail companions. They do not know how to bet; they have no chance to gamble.

Women who are so fortunate as to be given a chance to earn their living are regular in their habits. They are honest, sober, industrious, accurate, decent, and safe.

A great many women are already employed in all departments of business, and in all capacities. We doubt whether there is a case on record of one of them turning out a thief.

The Historian and His Horse.

George Bancroft still rides on horse- baek two hours daily and on Sunday three hours anda half. He recently re- ceived from Kentucky a proposition to know if he would pay 1,000 for the fast- est walker in the state, four and_ half years old. He took the horse “on appro- val,” and thisis the fine-gaited animal which he constantly rides, Although thoroughly bred and very spirited, the horse is perfectly broken and the vener- able historian manages him without difficulty. On Sundays he is generally accompanied in his long rides by . Li- brarian Spofford or Kandal Gibson of Lonisiana.— Boston Journal.
