A TIGNIS8 correspondent of the Summer- side Journal says that one day last week, while the section foreman, Mr. Joseph Har- per, wa going over the road, the een of the hand car caught in his clothes, precipitating him on the track, where he lay insensible, the wheels of the car passing over his body. When picked up, it was found that the fall had inflicted some severe bruises on his face and head.

A YOUNG wowmAN about 25 years of age, named Mary O'Neill, who has been a servant girl at the Dominion House for the past three months, is the mother of a child about eight- een months old, for the support of which she has been paying a woman named Mary Mor- rill, who resides on Kent Street near the Rocklin House. The Morrill woman, it ap- pears, got tired of caring for the child, and yesterday morning left it with the mother at the place where she was employed. The mother did not take kindly to the infant, and shortly afterwards started off with it for the Morrill residence. On arrival there, fiading she could not get into the house, ehe lefs the child at the back -door. The Morri'!l woman complained of the desertion at the Police Station. Officer Bradley proceeled to investigate, and found the child at the back door as stated. He in- duced the women to take the child into the house until he would see further about the matter, which she did. He then started to look for the mother of the child but could not find her at the place where she was employ- ed. Inthe meantime the two women had re- prired to the Police Station where they were discussing the matter before the officers. The Morrill woman gaveas an excuse for her con- duct in refasing to care for the child that she was obliged to go out to work to earn a living which she could aot do so long as she had the baby to look after. The O’Ne'll woman charged the other with keeping a house of prostitution and the police settled the matter hy committing both to jail to await trial be- fore the Stipendiary Magistrate this worrioy They were arraigned this morning and each were sentenced to six months imprisonment for prostitution, and the O'Neill girl was in addition sent up te the Supreme Court for child desertion A ‘‘boarder” of ™rs, Morrill’s »amed Pearn, was sentenced to

In answer to a question M-, McLelan said no applications had heen made by the Government of P. E Island for any ad- vance to that Province ont of the capital amount standing to its credit, that a claim had been made by the Island Government in respect to a refund for moneys expended on wharves and piers, and that the sum of $54,000 had been paid on that claim.

Waking Them Up, Portianp, Me., May 19

A large meeting of business men was held at the Fish Exchange to-day, for the pur- pose of taking action upoa the course of the Canadian Government in seizing the American fishing schooners. Speeches were made denouncing the course of the Dominion Government, and resolutions were adopted of a similar effect, and demanding that the President of the United States shouid issue a proclamation at once, declaring non-intercourse with the Dominion of Canada in all matters pertain- ing to the fisheries.

It was also resolved to ask the United States Government to send armed vessels into Canadian waters to protect American fishermen, and it was voted that if the Government refused to do so the fishermen will arm and equip their vessels for pr- tection from seizure.

Retaliation and Revenge. PorTLAND, Me., May 19.

The schooner Arctic, of Lockport, N. 8., arrived here to-day and gave an ordor for 980 barrels of bait. Considerable excite ment prevails among our fishermen and there is some talk of seizing her and run- ning her out of the harbor

The Gem of the Ocean witha permit te ‘‘touch and trade” is reported to be putting arme on board and shipping men to protect berself from seizure.

A vessel from the provinces is bound here with 75 barrels of mackerel for bait. These fish come free of duty, and are sold to our fishermen who must pay the freight charges, and choose for themselves as they cannot go to the provinces to buy.

The warships Tenedos and Mallard are daily expected from Bermuda to engage in the fishery protection service.

Despatches from Shelburne say that American fishermen baited with mackerel at Barrington yesterday, and that other American schooners are hoverivg off that place.

A despatch from St. Peter’s, C. B., says that the American schooner Louis A. Grant is there shipping a crew for the Grand Banks, and thus violating the treaty. She will probably be seized.

A despatch from Cape Coast Castle, the capital of the gold coast of Western Africa, says that a conflict is proceeding between the Becquahs and Admansis, two native tribes, and all trade with the interior is temporarily stopped. The Becquahs re- cently captured 45 German traders, and
