¢ ee Siamese Superstitions.

The first thing an orthodox Siamese does inthe morning is to scare away the family ghosts who may have gath- ered about the old place in the night. Letting off crackers is an effectual means. At the new year all the ghosts come trooping to their former dwell- ings. For three days they have their fun. At the end of the time the priests and their flocks fire guns and use other devices for getting rid of them. A Si- amese is coffined face downward, s0 that the ghost may not sneak back ‘through the dead man’s mouth. The ‘coffin is taken out through a hole in the wall and carried several times round the house in order that the ghost may de put off the scent and not return to vex his family.—-Exchange.

Horse Racing and Socialism,

in the Militar Wochenblatt, a leading German military organ, Herr Von Ploetz recommends horse racing as a panacea for socialism. He says that the reason why there is no socialism in England is that they encourage horse racing there and that ‘‘the love of the sport is the connecting link between all classes of meu, enabling the poor to comprehend the necessity for a difference of fortune.”’

Following out Herr Ploetz’s idea, it is said that gambling on horse racing is increasing in Germany at a tremendous rate, though so far no diminution of socialism has been noticed.

A. O. H.—The social under the aus- pices of Division No 1, last evening, was a most enjovable affair, and ranks with the best ever given by the Order here. There were about sixty couples in attendance. The spacious reading and recreation room was thrown open tothe gnests, who wer. by Biake, Mrs Byroe and Mrs Conroy. The weil-appoinied meeting room was ueed for reception and refresh- ment purposes.

McGill scored a try four minutes after play began, and no more scoring was done dur- ing the game. The Queen’s team put up a strong game, but they were enable to over- come the McGill wing work, and to its wings McGill owes the victory. “Duffy” the Herald says, *‘was everywhere at once. If he could only dodge a little better he would be a world-beater. A run by him was ove of the features of the game. Alley, besides playing a strong game, made an excellent captain.” Sutherland, another Islander, who plays half-back for McGill, also put up a splendid game.

There were several visitors from Lodges on the Island and abroad, among whom was Bro. Williams, a past officer of the Grand Lodge of England, who has also held a high pesition in the Grand Lodge of India, has visited many countries of the world, where the order is established, and is at present a resident of Bermuda. In his address he described the geneial state of the order, particularly as it existed in the West Indies, where even on Her Majesty’s ships there are lodges organized.

A talk on his trip to the Old Country will be delivered by Rev. W. J. Kirby next Thureday evening.

The class in book-keeping, under the auspices of the lodge, and conducted by Mr. E. H. Duchemin, is making satis fact- ory progress.
