A Water Lily Pond.
An admirable pond seen some years sinct was made in the following manner: A hole some 12 feet in diameter and 5 feet ir depth was first dug, and this was plastered with mortar to the depth of 4 inches ai the sides and bottom. A piece of lead pips was put in to make the desired drain, and due respect was paid to constructing s place outside of where it went through, sc that the water would drain off through + layer of rocks and sand. When the mor tar was dry, it was treated to a coat of cis tern cement. In the center was construct ed a miniature island of stones and earth and upon it was a mass of foliage anc flowers, while pink, white and yellow wa ter lilies filled the space around it, and some tadpoles grew to be sedate frogs un. der the shade of the broad leaves. One year half a dozen dwarf callas and a lot of old fashioned wandering jews made the | island a fairylike place, and several year: later amary)lis plants of many colors revel. ed in the sun and moisture of the island. Mrs. Flerence Craven, an honorary %5 gooiate of the order of St. Jobn, is, with the exception of Miss Nightingale, the oldest trained nurse in England. Outside of royalties, she has probably more deeora- tions than any other woman in the em- pire. She spent many years in the hos pitals of Holland, Denmark, Germany and France. When the Franco-Prussian war broke out, she volunteered for ambu- lance work and was placed in charge of a fever station of the Tenth army corps be- fore Metz. She had charge also of the Empress Fredorick’s lazaretto for wounded soldiers at Homburg. Mrs. Craven pos- sesses ® cross surmounted by the royal crown of Prussia, the decoration being spocially designed for her by the Empress Frederick, then crown princess. The Grane Duchess of Baden conferred an- other decoration—a red cross on oa white background, surmounted by the imperial eagle. Perhaps the most remarkable ot the distinctions she kas received is the Iron Cross, the order of merit presented by William I of Germany for distinguished services in time of war. She further re-

first German emperor for services in the war of 1870.
A Stury of Winnie Davis.
There is a story told of her by a resident of Philadelphia which shows why Winnie Davis was held so dear by the veterans of the Confederate army. The man who tells it was a colonel under the stars and bars and is now arich man. ‘‘But five years ago l wasn’t,’’ he says. ‘‘I’d lost every penny I’d had before the war, and I had not made many since. A big slump in the west had done for me, and I put up ata New York hotel with just enough to pay my bill and no more. My nerves gave way, and I was taken ill, The docto said I must havea long rest and a com plete change of scene. I said I might rest in the grave and change this scene for that of the next world, but that I had no mon- ey or friends and would never leave the city any way but feet first. Well, Miss Davis was stopping at that hotel. She knew I wouldn't accept money from her, so she got the doctor to pretend he was lending me his own. I went abroad and came home cured and already on the way to wealth. It was only then that I found out whom I owed my life to. You know her book, ‘The Veiled Doctor?’ Well, for me there is in an equivocal significance iz that name.’’—Philadelphia Press.
