It Was Known in Ngypt Before the Christ- ian Era. The artificial incubation of eggs is not
a modern invention. It was practised by the Chinese and the ancient Egyptians, Diodorus, who wrote 40 years B.C., tells us ‘‘that the Egyptians, with their own hands bring eggs to maturity, and the chickens thus produced are not inferior to those hatched in the ordinary man- ner.’’ The practice has been carried on hy the native Egyptians ever since, and the method still used has been employed from time immemorial. The eggs are placed on mats strewn with bran ina room about 11 feet square and four feet high. Over this is another room about nine feet high. In the upper room fires are made in troughs, and immediately below in corresponding lines inthe lower room the eggs to be hatched are Inaid out. After ten days the eggsare removed to another room where there are no fires, but from which the air is excluded. Here they remain five days, after which they are laid down, each one apart from the others, and continually turned. This stage lasts about seven days, and at the end of that time the chicken may be ex- pected to make its appearance.

Enrico Dandolo was elected Doge of Venice in 1193, being then 82 years old, and shortiy afterwards defeated the Pisans in two naval hattles. In 1202 and 1203 he subdued Trieste, Zarn and Con- stantinople. In 1204, at the age of 94, he again, at the head of the Venetians and the French Crusaders, attackel and stormed Constantinople, himself leading the van, and planting the Venetian flag on the ramparts. On tho establishment of the Latin empire of Constantinople, which immediately followei, he was offered the crown, hut delined it. He died in the following year (1205). He is said by some historians to have been blind, but it seems probable that he was only partially so. Count Von Moltke was over 70 when he undertook com- mand of the Prussian armies in the Franco-German war.
