Vnnv Sixoumn PliENOMENON.—A fiiond, who has just returned from the South. tells us that about forty miles this side of Tuscaloosa, on the road to Huntsville, the driver pointed to a large hole in a field, which he said was the ct ratest curiosity in the world. The passengers went to the spot, and found a ioiind hole about seventy feet in diameter, with the earth on all sides, apparently solid, and overgrown with grass. There was water at the bottom, apparently IOO leet from the surface. It is at the top of a ridge of earth, upon which, at the. dis- tance of?" rods, stood the deserted dive"- in: of the owner ofthis plantation. The iiiiicr stated that about three years ago, in the dusk ofthe evening, the planter “as startled by a rumbling noise, and stopping from his door, was astonished I'l iind that a magniﬁcent pine tree. more than a hundred feet in height, and :2 “Oil: oak which stood by its side in an open field, had both disappeared! On going to the spot, this hole appeared, but nothing was now to be seen ofthe trees, nor hastlie top of t heso ever been reached -—though a sounding line had been sent down three hundred feet. The planter deemed it unsafe to remain so near a neighbor to such a catastrophe, lest that should befal himself and his family which hotel the pine and the oak : and so he re- moved to another house iI mile distant, yet, nothing of the kind has happened, since, amt the wonder still remains unac- counted i'or .

Poor Pug was in a sad fright, well knowing the licking that awaited him. Nil desper- mtditm, however, was his motto. Ilc plucked his courage up, and the remain- ing partridge, and laid the bird in the window. The hawk, pleased with the feast; returned for another tit-bit; when I‘d: screeching, plucked him alive, and I'llilhlm and the partridge down before the cook; and with a gesture stronger than langtiage,seemed to say: “It’s all right, there’s your brace of birds—a fair exchange is no robbery.”

ELECTRICITY AT BREAKFAST.-—Dr. Lardner says—Startling as it may seem, i‘. is lcyond contradiction certain that

batterydoes not equal in quantity the electricity which passes between the tongue and a silver spoon, during the simple act of eating an egg. Indeed,“ the quantity developed in the latter case were free to assume the fortn of the elec. tricity obtained from friction, the result would be a lightning flash of no small power. Gazette tells a story of an incorrigible offender who, while on trial,and while the prosecuting attorney was addressing the . Court and jury, observing that one of thejurors had apparently fallen asleep, interrupted the counsel of the State by rcmarking—“ You may as well stop, sir, you have talked one ofthejtiry to sleep.” The counsel, indignant at the rascal’s nu- , dacity, launched forth into a torrent of a- buse, which, however, had butthe effect to arouse the attention oftlie jury and the bystanders, the accused all the while remaining untnoved. When the speaker had momentarily stopped to gather breath, the thief remarked, in the most unimpassionate manner conceivable-— “You can proceed with the argument now, sir—you have waked him up ."’ 1
