THE BANK OF ENGLAND ROBBED.

A Remarkably Daring Robbery,

BAG CONTAINING ONE THOU SAND POUNDS IN GOLD

Taken From the Bank’s Counter in

the Afternoon.

Lonpoy, Aug 3.—A remarkably daring robbery from the counter of the Bank of England took place shortly after o’clock on a recentafternoon. It appears thata clerk inthe employ of Coutts’ Bank went to the Bank with an order for 3,006 pounds, which he was instructed to bring away with him in three bags, each to contain 3,000 pounds iu gold. There were many people ina the bank when the order was given. The gold wastaken out in the usual way and put into three canvas bags—the bagsal- ways used for this purpose—and placed on the counter in front of Messrs Coutt’s mes~ senger. At this moment the young man’s attention was diverted and he turned his head. [he movement was only momen~ tary, but in this short pace of time somes body had removi ene of the bagsjaad disap- peared. The clerk first of all thougot that only two bags had been handed to him, so quickly had the other one been snatched away, but he was soon convinced that afew seconds before three bags bad been placed before him, No one

News of the theft was immediately conveyed to the city police station ‘in Old Jewry, anda message was also sent to Scotland Yar:. Two detectives were in~ stantly told of to make inqairies into the case, but with absolutely no cline to work upon, they have an extreme- ly difficult task before them. The theft wea evidently a very cleverly planned one, and it is thought that Messrs Coutts’ clerk had been very closely »had- owed by the robber or one of his cono- federates. They bad, it is thought. by carefully watching Messrs. Coutts’ bank became aware of the fact that at certain times on certain days it was the habit to sendtotbe Bank of England for large sums of mouey in gold. They watched their chance, and 80 managed with mar- velous cooloess and séill to bring off this successful coup,

New York, Aug 3.—Twenty nine Span- ich and French refugees from Havana and Cardenas !anded yesterday from the Nor» wegian steamer Fridtjof Nansen, from Sagua La Grande, Ali but two were weil supplied with money. Petrona Rivas with

his family fled from Caba on the Fridtjo Nansen.

“ Money of which there is 20 security in Havana is useless in purchasing the necessaries of life,” said Senor Rivas.

The only meat to be had in Havana be- fore the Nansen left Sagua, on July 26, was from the carcasses of horses and dogs. Every day an average of ten or cwelve persons died in the streeis frorn starvation. Highway robbery and burgulary are pre= valent everywhere in the city.

“The famous Englattra hotel, together with other hotels, has been obliged to close its doors. The jandiord could not secure provisions. Fully 25 ber cent of the big stores have closed up.”

Senor Rivas said tbat all there concen - trados’ are not dead, but he wonders how any survive: On Thursday night they still heve music in the parks, while the people are starving al! around. Bread has risen to 28 cents per pound while horse flesh is selling for a dollar per ponnd.
